Science in the Garden: A Qualitative Analysis of School-based Agricultural Educators’ Strategies

This collective case study investigated how two Ohio school-based agricultural educators use school gardens to teach science, including socioscientific issues (SSI). Qualitative data from semistructured interviews revealed that both teachers utilized applied science teaching methods and expressed frustrations regarding the difficulty of meeting mandated science learning standards. Although controversial topics were often integrated, fidelity to the SSI framework did not appear to be utilized.

A six-week study in summer 2017 in urban gardens in California, conducted with volunteer gardeners, examined how ambient temperature, water use, vegetation, ground cover, and soil management affect soil moisture gain and loss rates. The research found that plot-level soil management is essential for maintaining stable water levels within garden soils. Plots with better soil quality, indicated by higher water holding capacity, experienced slower rates of soil moisture gain after watering but also slower rates of soil moisture loss, resulting in more stable moisture profiles over time.

Irrigation evaluations were performed for 24 urban and small farms in Cache Valley, Utah, during the 2015 growing season. A great degree of heterogeneity was observed in irrigation methods, equipment, and management practices. Small fields had lower application uniformities and greater irrigation depths than large fields, and surface-irrigated fields had higher depths than sprinkle and drip-irrigated fields. The study concluded that urban and small farm irrigators need improved knowledge of proper irrigation management.

This article analyzes a Michigan Sustainability Case (MSC) on urban farming in Detroit, developed by the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS). This MSC embodies principles of cocreation, integration into multiple curricula, and digital innovation for enhanced experiential learning, having been collaboratively produced, deployed, and iteratively improved in successive SEAS classrooms. It incorporated field learning in Detroit, providing strong user experiences for students, faculty, and practitioners.

Using data from the literature and government sources, this study quantified life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the United States food system at an estimated 3,800 kg CO2e per capita in 2010, with cities directly influencing about two-thirds of food-sector emissions. Assessing selected mitigation measures, the study found that up-scaling urban agriculture and expanding home grocery delivery would each cut only about 0.4% and roughly 1% of total food-sector emissions respectively, whereas changes in waste management and a 50% reduction in post-distribution food waste would cut total food-sector emissions by 5% and 11% respectively.

This dissertation addresses agricultural extensification from several angles. Chapter 1's literature review showed an increase in research on urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) and ecosystem services, but highlighted a need for quantifying ecosystem services and functions to clarify ecological tradeoffs. Subsequent chapters focused on a mixed-methods study in New Hampshire, surveying approximately 600 residents (494 general population, 103 food system stakeholders) on their perception of forestland conversion to agriculture.

The chapter provides evidence that UPA activities can reduce poverty and hunger, generate food and nutrition security benefits, and create employment and income for poor urban households in LAC.

This study examined the role of urban agriculture from a Brazilian agricultural perspective through qualitative and exploratory bibliographic research. It hypothesized that urban agriculture serves not only to supply food demand but also as a promoter of environmental education and sustainable development. The findings indicated that urban agriculture revives previously used agroecological principles, effectively contributes to environmental education, and enhances sustainable development by fulfilling the economic, social, and environmental orders of urban ecosystems.

This study investigated associations between urbanization and flying arthropod communities in 30 gardens and parks in Toledo, Ohio, during July and August 2016, collecting 2,369 individuals across nine orders using elevated pan traps. Flying arthropod community composition was associated with percent impervious surface and canopy cover. Overall abundance was negatively associated with impervious surface and positively with distance to city center, with specific taxa showing similar responses, indicating urbanization reduces taxa important for urban agriculture.

Existing literature lacks environmental appraisals comparing urban and rural food production, leaving questions about whether the benefits of reduced farm-to-fork distance are outweighed by energy demands of year-round growing systems, and if farm-scale resource efficiencies translate to meaningful shifts in a city's environmental footprint. This report comprises six chapters that explore and contribute to the understanding of urban food systems.

This study assessed the potential of urban land to grow "climate smart food," a term proposed to examine the environmental impact of urban food production. Using the Bowness neighbourhood in Calgary, Alberta, as a case study, a geospatial constraint mapping process analyzed suitable private land for conversion from lawns to gardens. In 2016, six urban farms in Calgary produced approximately 8,200 pounds of food from private gardens, while 42% of Bowness's private turf grass land produced only about 800 pounds, quantifying underutilized urban land for food production.

Qualitative student surveys indicated increased knowledge and impact on career directions. However, the 2017 program plans were disrupted when Hurricane Harvey flooded the school and destroyed student aquaponics systems, necessitating a focus on rebuilding and future resiliency.

This paper analyzed the technical and financial feasibility of a stand-alone photovoltaic powered irrigation system applied to a familiar production unit in Brazil. The system was installed at the Center for Teaching and Research in Urban Agriculture (NEPAU) on the PICI campus of the Federal University of Ceará, occupying 134 m² with a 3534-liter water reservoir, a 12 VDC pump motor, and a 135 Wp photovoltaic module. Efficiencies for the photovoltaic module, pump, and global set were 8.4%, 42%, and 3.5% respectively, with an assumed service life of 25 years and capital return after 9.3 years.

It found that metropolitan California's decentralized water supply and diverse institutional arrangements create an uneven landscape of water access for UA. This results in geographically and socially differentiated pressures on UA water users to change water-consuming practices, with responses varying due to site-specific sociotechnical arrangements and UA purposes.

This case study assessed greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from five Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) operations in the Sacramento Valley, California, collecting input, production and distribution data from each farm and reporting emissions in CO2e per 1 kg of CSA produce at the pickup location. Total emissions varied widely, ranging from 1.72 to 6.69 kg CO2e per kg of produce with an average of 3.94 kg CO2e, and electricity was the largest emissions source, contributing over 70% of total CO2e on average. Despite apparent similarities among the operations in production site, acreage, customer base and practices, there was still substantial variability in total GHG emissions. The study argues that the complexity of production and distribution systems means food systems cannot be reduced to a simple binary of local being better than conventional, or vice versa, though localized production systems that use less electricity (or renewable energy) and efficiently produced compost had lower GHG emissions than those that did not.

Separately collected urine is presented as an attractive potential fertilizer because of its high nutrient content, low cost, and inherent link between urban wastewater management and peri-urban agriculture. Urine from waterless urinals was applied to corn and lettuce to examine the impact of application rate and frequency on plant growth and soil parameters; in both crops, urine application significantly (p < 0.05) increased growth and leaf production relative to control plants. More frequent applications led to lower soil cation exchange capacity for corn and higher soil nitrogen content for both crops. Preliminary implementation calculations suggest that installing waterless urinals at the University of São Paulo's School of Arts, Sciences, and Humanities campus could save over 1,500 m³ of water and produce 360 m³ of urine annually; these experimental and modeling results are discussed in the context of scaling up urban urine collection, transport, and fertilization in São Paulo, Brazil.

This study developed a framework for life cycle environmental assessment of urban organic waste utilization in urban agriculture, specifically fruit and vegetable production. Results suggest that a full "urban nutrient cycle" offers significant environmental benefits, including meeting up to 70% of vegetable and 17% of fruit consumption needs in Northern and Eastern U.S. cities, with potential water savings of 10-17% of annual domestic use. Optimizing resource recovery through source separation leads to 1-2% lower wastewater generation and up to 44% greater phosphorus recovery, while overall energy and emissions benefits are 1-2% of a city's annual totals.

This paper examines the relationship between scientific definitions of drought and water management politics, using a case study of the 2007–09 drought in Georgia, USA. Data from archival research, direct observation, and interviews with urban agricultural sector members, environmental regulators, and government officials revealed how stakeholders produced and utilized multiple understandings of drought. The study found that stakeholders can leverage drought complexity to achieve political goals and alter water management, as demonstrated by the green industry in Georgia in 2009.

This qualitative study analyzed the role of family urban agriculture in urban sustainability in San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, using open and structured interviews. The visited agricultural systems showed characteristics favoring resilience and sustainability, such as low use of external inputs and recycling of domestic waste. However, a limitation found was that the contribution of own production to family consumption is very low, despite existing food, environmental, and socio-cultural motivations for its continuity.
