Intensification or marginalization: peri-urban agriculture for mitigating urban heat island effects in summer

This study investigated the summer impact of peri-urban agriculture (PUA) on surface urban heat island (SUHI) mitigation across China using time-series satellite observations and a coupled land-atmosphere model for Changchun City. It found that PUA management changes with urbanization pressure, and widespread agricultural marginalization near cities significantly impacts SUHI during summer. Larger cities derive less thermal benefit from PUA, although an agricultural intensification scenario showed a limited average cooling effect of 0.07–0.16 °C on urban cores.

This study investigated how Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture (AUP) can address climate inequalities as an extension of the fundamental right to a sustainable city, given Brazil's accelerated urbanization and worsening heat islands in peripheral areas. Using a hypothetical-deductive method and documentary and content analysis of institutional, journalistic, and academic data from 2000 to 2026, the study analyzed AUP practices' contribution to mitigating thermal and socioeconomic asymmetries. Results indicate that AUP restores land use value, fills normative gaps in master plans, and establishes itself as a vector for democratic governance, food sovereignty, and intergenerational urban sustainability.

This study evaluated the cooling effects of rooftop gardens on land surface temperature (LST) in Dhaka North City Corporation, Bangladesh, using satellite observations from March to May 2022. Researchers identified 2,012 buildings with rooftop gardens and 43,553 without, deriving daytime LST from Landsat 8 data. Results indicate that rooftop gardens reduce mean rooftop LST by up to 1.99 °C during peak heat in May and suppress extreme rooftop temperatures by 3.9–6.4 °C across the pre-monsoon season, also showing reduced thermal variability.

This study developed a Geo-AI ensemble modeling framework to assess groundwater contamination dynamics in peri-urban agricultural aquifers. Applied to the Manouba aquifer in Tunisia using 295 samples from 85 wells (2005-2025), the spatial analysis revealed severe contamination expanded from 7% of the study area in 2005 to 55% in 2025. Urban expansion and agricultural intensification were found to reduce recharge, increase pollutant loading, and accelerate contaminant accumulation.

This study analyzed the sustainability of the food system in the Belém Metropolitan Region, Brazil, focusing on public institutional purchasing policies in 2022. Municipalities allocated 31 million reais to the National School Feeding Program, with 43.5% from family farming, exceeding the legal target. The Food Acquisition Program saw the Abril Vermelho settlement sell 28 tons of food, prioritizing permanent crops and agro-ecological practices.

This systematic review of 43 peer-reviewed articles (2003–2026) examines how the Water–Energy–Food (WEF) Nexus is conceptualized and operationalized in urban agriculture literature. It identifies four thematic domains and three modes of WEF Nexus integration: conceptual-strategic, operational-partial, and operational-systematic. The review finds heterogeneous forms of integration, from strategic framing to partial or, less frequently, fully systemic assessments of water, energy, and food relations.

A systematic evaluation in 2018 assessed the potential for low-tech, open-air, soil-based urban vegetable production across 840 cities in 30 European countries. The study used geospatial, demographic, and climate data under three land-use intensity scenarios. It estimated that 4551–7586 km² of urban land could yield 11.8–19.8 million tons of vegetables annually, roughly one-third of reported production, revealing substantial opportunities but also structural limits due to spatial variation.

This study proposed and validated a virtual sensor-driven digital twin system for monitoring plant growth on rooftop farms, using a rooftop tomato case in Xiamen, China. The system integrates environmental data acquisition, LSTM–DSSAT model prediction, database storage, and 3D visualization. The coupled Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) weather prediction model and Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) crop growth model achieved high predictive accuracy for leaf area index (R2=0.9814) and aboveground biomass (R2=0.9966), supporting 7-day forecasts for phenology and yield.

This study examined environmental, technological, and socio-economic determinants influencing the ecological viability of AI integration in Kinshasa's peri-urban agriculture, which faces threats like soil degradation and inadequate infrastructure. A field survey of 411 farmers in the Kimwenza area found 86.13% viewed AI positively despite major structural constraints, including lack of electricity (78.83%) and digital illiteracy (54.99%). The study highlights the current lack of anticipatory public policies to address these constraints for a sustainable digital transformation.

Peri-urban agriculture in the Democratic Republic of Congo heavily relies on natural rainfall, leading to yield decreases of up to 50% and a lengthening of the crop cycle from 21 to 45 days during the dry season. This study proposes the design and implementation of an autonomous IoT-based irrigation system to optimize water use at Green Village, Kinshasa. The proposed solution aims to enable real-time adaptive irrigation, reducing water loss and stabilizing production.

This study developed and evaluated the Eco-Levee Coastal Corridor (ELCC) as a multifunctional spatial adaptation model for coastal settlements in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, vulnerable to tidal flooding and erosion. Employing integrated spatial analysis and a design-based approach, the research found that ELCC enhances coastal resilience by combining hybrid engineering with Nature-Based Solutions like vegetated buffers and edible forest systems. This configuration reduces coastal hazard exposure, improves environmental quality, and supports local livelihoods.

This systematic review, guided by PRISMA 2020 protocols, examined decades of peer-reviewed studies on thermal remote sensing, focusing on NASA’s ECOSTRESS mission, to evaluate urban agriculture's (UA) cooling benefits and water demand. The review found that UA can lower localized land surface temperature by 1–5°C and that ECOSTRESS-derived evapotranspiration provides robust estimates for optimizing irrigation. However, gaps persist in validation methods, socio-economic integration, and multi-climate assessments.

This qualitative study in Navotas City explored the economic viability and marketability of aeroponics systems in urban agriculture. Findings indicate aeroponics requires high initial investment and faces challenges such as produce failing to meet specific weight standards for sale, high energy consumption, and high setup costs. While offering benefits like efficient resource use and high yields, further improvements in system efficiency and operational methods are needed for it to become a viable and scalable business model.

This study analyzed the total water footprint (WF) and its components for 64 agricultural households (33 urban, 31 rural) in Enugu State, Southeast Nigeria. The total WF of urban agricultural households was 19,516.9 m³/month, 6.6% higher than rural households (17,088.2 m³), though the blue WF of rural households exceeded urban households by 4.7%. The study identified inefficient water use in urban households and limited water-saving devices in rural households as critical drivers of water consumption.

This article examines the contribution of organic agriculture to food security, identifying its role in maintaining soil fertility, supporting biodiversity, and increasing agricultural system resilience to climate change. The study also notes limitations, including lower yields, higher certification costs, and limited economic accessibility of organic products. It concludes that organic agriculture is an important element of an integrated food security model.

This study analyzes protected cultivation and hydroponics in Brazil as technologies enabling full control of environmental variables and eliminating dependence on climate seasonality. These technologies demonstrate 80-95% reductions in water consumption, 300-500% increases in productivity compared to open fields, and complete elimination of agrochemical residues. However, the study also points out implementation challenges for these technologies, concluding they are fundamental for food security in contexts of accelerated urbanization, water scarcity, and global climate change.

This study analyzed land use and land cover (LULC) changes in Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, between 1993 and 2023 using multi-temporal Landsat satellite imagery. The analysis revealed that built-up areas expanded by 1,433%, from 124.20 ha in 1993 to 1,905.14 ha in 2023. Concurrently, cultivated land decreased by 96.6%, from 172.90 ha to 5.88 ha, representing a loss of 167.02 ha. The near-complete elimination of cultivated land in Kinondoni District indicates a critical threat to local food production capacity and urban food security.

Findings showed rapid urban expansion converted 30% of peri-urban agricultural land in some regions, increasing dependence on imported staples, and low-income households spend 60–80% of income on food. A policy gap was identified, with only 12% of countries having supportive policies and 19% of cities designating land for farming.

This study, conducted in Bhubaneswar city, India, assessed the cooling effect of urban rooftop farming on buildings and their surroundings. By comparing temperatures in buildings with and without rooftop gardens, the research found that rooftop farming reduces the temperature in building rooms and adjacent areas. This cooling effect contributes to mitigating micro-climate change and urban heat island effects, thereby lowering cooling expenses for urban inhabitants.

This study reframes community-based urban agriculture as an integrated socio-spatial and environmental infrastructure in dense urban areas, using a case study in Kemantren Gondokusuman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data from field mapping and spatial analysis identified 22 urban agriculture sites, with a density of approximately 0.055 sites/ha, in an area with only 14.5% green open space. Findings indicate that urban agriculture functions as a micro-scale environmental infrastructure by integrating spatial efficiency, production systems, environmental functions, and community-based operational mechanisms, achieving environmental performance through the functional intensification of fragmented spaces.

This study investigated the effects of food production, urbanization, livestock production, and energy use on environmental quality in Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member economies. Using the PCS-ARDL approach, it found that food production and energy consumption positively impact environmental quality, while urbanization and livestock production negatively affect it. The results suggest a need for cohesive policies to balance these factors.
