1.2 mile community compost (Omotesando, 4Nature)

Tokyo, Japan · Operator: 株式会社4Nature

Overview

A community-compost project hubbed at an Omotesando food court where residents within a 2-km radius bring household food scraps to compost together; the finished compost and vegetable-growing foster 'neighborly ties starting from soil' in central Tokyo.

Citizen participation

Participants bring compost they have started at home to a shared hub to build one large communal compost together; used sugarcane straws are also collected and composted alongside it.

Operating model

Operated by 4Nature, which sells and reclaims sugarcane straws; runs a membership community and embeds an urban food cycle using the resulting compost into its business.

Impact

Turns household food scraps into a resource within constrained inner-city space while building community; has expanded to other hubs such as Sendagaya, becoming a pioneering urban community-compost case.

Crops

  • herbs
  • leafy greens
  • community-garden vegetables

Scale

表参道のフードコート『COMMUNE』を拠点に、半径約1.2マイル(2km)圏の住民約50名を募集して共同コンポストを運営。
