Overview
Launched by Bandung in 2020, 'Buruan SAE' (Sundanese for 'good yard') is an integrated urban-farming programme combining vegetables, livestock, fishery, medicinal plants and organic-waste composting. By 2022 it had grown to 335 groups across 151 villages.
Citizen participation
Resident groups at the neighbourhood level use home yards and vacant plots in an integrated way—vegetables, fish, livestock, medicinal plants and composting—run by the residents themselves.
Operating model
Public programme led by the city food-and-agriculture department; resident groups consume, share and sell produce, with the city providing guidance and inputs.
Impact
Expanded across all city villages, strengthening urban food self-sufficiency and neighbourhood cohesion. During COVID-19 residents shared harvests to reduce food-shortage risk; some sites grew into agro-tourism areas.
Land tenure
Primarily uses residents' own yards and shared neighbourhood land under city authorisation and support.
