Overview
Gothenburg's colony and allotment gardens, begun in 1903 inspired by the German colony movement. Alongside around 3,000 colony plots, shared urban-farming gardens run by growing associations have spread in recent years, actively supported by the city.
Citizen participation
Citizens join growing associations (10–100 members) and grow vegetables in shared urban-farming plots and historic colony (allotment) gardens. The city's property office stimulates small-scale and residential cultivation, run as spaces that connect generations and people from different parts of the city.
Operating model
A public/collaborative model in which the city property office provides and supports land; citizen growing associations manage plots, and colony gardens are leased to individuals for a low fee, aimed at recreation and self-growing rather than profit.
Impact
For over a century it has given workers and ordinary citizens affordable access to gardening and self-growing. Thousands of Gothenburg residents grow vegetables in community gardens and residential areas, contributing to cross-generational exchange and urban biodiversity.
