Overview
A household compost-integrated raised-bed garden developed in drought- and erosion-prone Lesotho by the Consortium for Southern Africa Food Security Emergency (C-SAFE), based on a design CARE used in Zimbabwe, and spread widely across southern Africa.
Citizen participation
Households build round, waist-high raised stone beds about 2 m across. A central compost basket fed with kitchen waste and water keeps the soil fertile, and the height lets the sick and elderly tend them without bending. Families and communities grow leafy greens and root crops.
Operating model
A household-garden model in which NGOs provide the design, seeds and tools and residents build and run the gardens themselves, aimed primarily at self-consumption and nutrition rather than sales.
Impact
Research finds keyhole gardening raises the likelihood of food security and reduces moderate and severe food insecurity by about 11% and 42% respectively, with larger gains for households that received seed and tool support.

Gradski vrtovi — the City of Zagreb's network of citizen garden plots (Croatia)

Launched by a mayoral decision of 4 April 2013, the scheme develops city-owned arable land and lends plots to residents free of charge for growing vegetables, berries, medicinal herbs and flowers for their own use. It started from three locations in spring 2013, reached 12 by 2017, and now covers 14 gardens, more than 2,152 plots and 23.03 hectares. Growing to ecological principles is required across all sites, with plot inspections and soil analyses.

A foundation on the outskirts of Kathmandu that builds a community-wide cycle around an organic and biodynamic farm, combined with a school, medical care, a café and a workshop. Cows and chickens are kept, and food waste and manure are routed through composting and biogas to supply the farm's own fertiliser.
