Overview
A foundation on the outskirts of Kathmandu that builds a community-wide cycle around an organic and biodynamic farm, combined with a school, medical care, a café and a workshop. Cows and chickens are kept, and food waste and manure are routed through composting and biogas to supply the farm's own fertiliser.
Citizen participation
In the settlement of Kahare, south-west of Kathmandu, 53 community members work across the foundation's farm, school, medical, café and workshop activities. The foundation also carries out educational outreach on sustainable farming to rural farmers elsewhere in Nepal.
Operating model
The foundation, set up in 2010 by Krishna and Leela Gurung, runs the site. The farm uses biodynamic and organic methods, making its own fertiliser through composting, cow-manure mixing and biogas. An on-site eco-café uses locally sourced ingredients, and together with the school and free medical treatment the operation returns employment, education and meals to the community.

The initiative provides employment for 53 community members, supports around 200 people, and runs a school for 186 students, alongside free medical treatment.
