Overview

Founded in 2007 by Kazuma Nishitsuji, MyFarm rehabilitates abandoned farmland across Japan into accessible experience farms for city dwellers, under the philosophy of a 'grow-your-own, eat-your-own society'.

Citizen participation

Citizens rent plots and grow their own vegetables with staff teaching planting and tool use, in 'grow-your-own, eat-your-own' experience farms.

Operating model

Leases and rehabilitates abandoned farmland to rent out as fee-based experience farms, alongside an agricultural school and consulting.

Impact

Revives abandoned farmland nationwide, gives urban residents hands-on farming experience, and trains new participants in local agriculture.

Indonesia Berkebun (National Community Gardening Movement)

Originated as 'Jakarta Berkebun' from an October 2010 Twitter call by architect Ridwan Kamil and collaborators. The first planting on 20 February 2011 drew about 150 people, and the movement spread to 14 cities within six months, becoming a national urban-farming community network.

AgroCité — R-Urban (Colombes / Gennevilliers)

The flagship example of the R-Urban strategy, turning vacant suburban land near Paris into citizen-run agro-cultural hubs. AgroCité, combining urban agriculture, recycling and low-energy building, was born in Colombes, dismantled in 2017 to make way for a car park, and rebuilt in Gennevilliers after a residents' campaign. It is internationally known as a model of the urban commons.
