Overview
Denmark's first rooftop farm, opened in 2014 atop a former car-auction house in Copenhagen's Østerbro district. With a 600 m² organic growing area plus a greenhouse, henhouse and beehives, it connects food and nature in the heart of the city through a CSA and volunteers.
Citizen participation
As Denmark's first rooftop farm, citizens take part as members of a community-supported agriculture (CSA) scheme, paying in advance for a weekly share of the harvest. From April to mid-November, volunteers of all ages from around the world join every Tuesday in growing, beekeeping and tending hens, and the roof serves as an open green breathing space for the city.
Operating model
Run as a non-profit collaborative. Supported by pre-paid CSA membership fees, the rooftop restaurant 'Gro Spiseri', workshops and events, and volunteer labour.
Impact
A pioneering example of turning urban rooftops into productive green and community space, supplying organic vegetables to around 40 CSA member households and offering volunteers and citizens a place to learn about urban farming and food production.
