Palette Kumoji Rooftop Garden (Sky Garden, Hatamusubi x MyFarm)

Naha, Okinawa, Japan · Operator: 久茂地都市開発 / 株式会社マイファーム(ハタムスビ)

Overview

A downtown rooftop rental garden launched in 2023 on the 10th floor of Naha's Palette Kumoji complex, said to be the prefecture's first. Run by Kumoji Urban Development with MyFarm, residents rent plots monthly and garden in the city with free tools and recycled-material soil.

Citizen participation

Residents rent a plot on the 10th-floor Sky Garden of Palette Kumoji, Naha's central commercial complex, for 5,000 yen a month to grow vegetables. Tools and fertiliser are free, and the soil 'Grow Earth' made from wood offcuts keeps hands clean, letting people garden casually downtown.

Operating model

Operated as a rental rooftop garden through a partnership of Kumoji Urban Development and MyFarm. Said to be the prefecture's first downtown rental garden, it uses a monthly subscription model with bookings via the 'Hatamusubi' website.

Impact

It created a new urban-farming spot on a city-centre rooftop where residents can routinely touch soil and experience growing food.
