Quinta da Granja Horticultural Park (Lisbon)

One of the first municipal horticultural parks opened by Lisbon in 2011, turning vacant lots and run-down parks into plots tended by residents — a leading Portuguese example of urban farming that links green infrastructure with social inclusion and food education.

A municipal social and recreational allotment park where residents rent plots to grow their own vegetables, fruit and herbs. Plots are prioritised for unemployed, elderly and low-income residents, and the park is open to all to relax in — so popular that around 100 people apply for every 20 plots.

Built and run by the city as part of Lisbon's urban-garden programme, with residents renting plots at low cost. Rolled out from 2011 under the city's 2008 Green Plan and Biodiversity Action Plan.

Gives city residents affordable, stable access to growing space and supports the participation of elderly and low-income people; now part of a city-wide network of about 800 plots over 9.1 hectares that strengthens green corridors and local community.

Plots developed by the city and licensed to individual gardeners.
