Overview
An intergenerational community garden opened on 2 July 2025 in the grounds of Gozo General Hospital, run jointly by Gozo College Agius de Soldanis Middle School, GLOBE Malta, Nature Trust-FEE Malta and the hospital under the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing. Students and older residents work one plot together, growing fruit, vegetables and herbs alongside indigenous plants that draw bees and butterflies.
Citizen participation
Students, teachers, parents, older residents and hospital staff work the same beds side by side. Elderly participants pass traditional growing knowledge to the students, and care of the crops is shared by everyone. No pesticides are used and the garden area follows a zero-waste policy.
Operating model
A partnership of a school, environmental NGOs and the hospital. A recipe book, Fil-Ġnien man-Nanna in Autumn & Winter, built on ingredients harvested on site, is offered for a €5 donation. No breakdown of running costs has been published.
Impact
The organisers report that working across generations on a shared goal has created new friendships. Organic waste is composted communally on site and the food is grown without pesticides on permaculture principles. The project was named a finalist for the European Commission's Green Skills Award under the #ForOurPlanet Award.
Land tenure
A school and NGOs opened the garden in the grounds of a public hospital; the land arrangement is not published.
