Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan · Operator: UR都市機構(無印良品/MUJI HOUSE、隈研吾・佐藤可士和ディレクション、住民「かもめプロジェクト」と協働)
Overview
A flagship of UR's 'Future of Danchi' project at Yokodai Chuo Danchi in Isogo Ward, Yokohama. Directed by architect Kengo Kuma and creative director Kashiwa Sato, it renewed facades, plazas, small parks and the meeting hall, regenerating outdoor space and daily life through resident workshops (the Kamome Project), a community cafe and planting and markets.
Citizen participation
Through the resident workshop 'Kamome Project', residents shaped ideas for the plazas and meeting hall; after renovation the community cafe and small parks host resident-led workshops, planting, markets and harvest events, with residents engaged in shaping the outdoor spaces.
Operating model
A model area of UR's 'Future of Danchi' project, combining MUJI×UR unit renovations with outdoor and common-space renewal directed by Kengo Kuma and Kashiwa Sato, sustained by rents and area revitalization.
Impact
Became a nationwide model for resident-engaged regeneration of aging danchi's outdoor and common facilities, widely cited as an advanced case of danchi regeneration and area management, and an emblem of MUJI×UR's whole-community renovation.
