The Idea of a City That Feeds Bees
The word "pollinator" tends to summon pastoral scenes — meadows, hedgerows, open country. Yet research increasingly suggests that the paved and built-up city can itself become a surprising refuge for wild bees and other pollinators. Cities hold a patchwork of green spaces, gardens that each plant something different, often lower pesticide use than farmland, and long, staggered flowering seasons. This heterogeneity is exactly what supports a diversity of pollinators. One study describes urban areas as "hotspots for bees and pollination" — though, importantly, not a panacea for all insects. So the question is not whether a city can be kind to pollinators, but how we deliberately rebuild it for them, plot by plot and roof by roof. This column begins from that practice rather than from abstract argument.
Let us set down one distinction at the outset. Placing a beehive on a rooftop is not the same thing as conserving pollinators. There are roughly 20,000 known bee species worldwide, and the honeybee (Apis mellifera) is just one of them. The great majority of wild bees are solitary, nest in the ground or in cavities, and make no honey at all. Research suggests that where managed hives grow too dense in a city, they can compete with wild bees for forage and actually depress wild-bee species richness. So the field practices gathered here are chosen not around harvesting honey, but around a wider question: how do we support the whole assembly of pollinators — the inconspicuous solitary bees, the hoverflies, the butterflies and moths — that quietly do the work?

What a Single Plot Can Do
So what, concretely, can a single plot in an urban farm or community garden do? In fact there are several hands-on practices, tested around the world, whose logic is well understood and whose unit of action is small enough for one person to begin. In Oslo, the citizens' group ByBi has since 2015 strung together "flowering stepping stones" across the city, building a route along which pollinators can find food and shelter. In the UK, the charity Plantlife asks people to leave their lawns uncut through May in its "No Mow May" campaign, letting wildflowers bloom. Buglife is mapping "B-Lines," insect pathways roughly three kilometres wide, across the country. Each looks like a grand scheme, yet the unit of action is always small: one garden, one lawn, one nesting box.
