This study in Batu City, Indonesia, evaluated the sustainability of agricultural production in three sub-districts—Batu, Junrejo, and Bumiaji—using the PROMETHEE method. Data were collected through FGDs, interviews with key stakeholders, and secondary statistical sources, analyzing five sustainability indicators including horticultural vegetables, biopharmaceutical crops, ornamental plants, fruit crops, and small farmer labor availability. The results showed that Bumiaji sub-district had the highest net flow value for sustainability, while Batu sub-district showed declining performance.

A study in Tan Uyen City, Binh Duong Province, assessed the potential for reusing treated domestic wastewater for urban agriculture. Data from the city's wastewater treatment system showed high efficiency, with COD reduced by 94.49% and BOD5 by 97.1%. The treated water met QCVN 39:2011/BTNMT requirements and is suitable for irrigating landscape greenery, vegetables, or short-term industrial crops.

An ecopreneurship-based urban farming assistance program was implemented with the Karya Jaya 4 Farmers Group in Deket District, Indonesia, where agricultural land conversion reduced rice and fish production. The program provided training on hydroponic aquaponic systems and supported the construction of five backyard systems. This initiative increased participants' knowledge and skills, achieved an 85% success rate in system management, and contributed to increased household food production, income, and food security.

This qualitative case study analyzed Tanduria's branding strategy for its organic fertilizer and pesticide products, focusing on brand strength, uniqueness, and favorability. Through direct observations and in-depth interviews with Tanduria’s founders, the study found that the Indonesian urban farming platform successfully promotes its brand by emphasizing ease of use and environmental sustainability, particularly targeting the Millennial generation for home-based planting. This strategy effectively strengthens Tanduria's image as a modern, eco-friendly brand aligned with urban lifestyles.

Integration of Digital Innovation in Urban Farming: A Review towards Advancing Sustainable Food Security in South and Southeast Asian Cities

This systematic review examined urban farming systems in South and Southeast Asian countries to address research gaps in technology adoption, costs, environmental benefits, and policy. Using the PRISMA method and Scopus/Web of Science databases, the review found that urban farming contributes to sustainability by reducing environmental impacts, improving water usage, and managing waste. It also noted that energy-efficient technologies and automation can decrease carbon emissions and optimize land use for increased yields, fostering self-reliant food systems.

Unplanned urban growth in Jakarta has hindered social interaction and fostered individualism due to an imbalance in facilities, distance, and population. This paper proposes urban agriculture as an effective means to create new spaces for social interaction. By establishing an urban agricultural plot at TPA Ikhlasul Machfudz in South Jakarta and conducting community service and empowerment activities, the project successfully created a new interaction space for local residents, allowing participants to engage in productive activities and social interaction.

This paper synthesizes six studies to examine Sikkim's organic farming model, evaluating farmer perceptions, productivity, policy gaps, and urban innovations like rooftop farming. While organic farming in Sikkim boosted yields, lowered input expenses, and improved environmental conditions, marketing and scalability remain significant obstacles, and short-term transition costs and limited market infrastructure are economic constraints. Rooftop agriculture in Gangtok was identified as a valuable addition for urban food security.

This study analyzed the competence level of 48 field agricultural extension workers (PPL) in rice development in Palopo City, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, using a census approach with interviews and field observations. Findings indicated a high overall competence level (70.39%), with social competence highest (79.61%), followed by technical (72.37%), and managerial (60.53%). Managerial aspects, particularly program planning and digital technology utilization, were identified as areas needing improvement.

This study analyzed the 'Potted Tomato Experiential Learning Group' program, applying Kolb's experiential learning theory and an SNS-based collaborative learning model. 700 elementary, middle, and high school students in Gyeonggi Province used tomato cultivation kits and online content to share their cultivation process and learning experiences on Instagram. Communication via SNS facilitated real-time feedback, information sharing, and peer interaction, which increased learning motivation and participation.

The initiative aimed to educate residents on urban farming methods to utilize limited urban land for vegetable cultivation, addressing their unfamiliarity with floating raft hydroponics. The activity successfully enabled many participants to understand and practice floating raft cultivation at home.

In Tambakrejo Village, Semarang City, Indonesia, a challenge exists due to the low human resource capacity in managing integrated urban farming. This program aims to enhance partners' capacity to develop an integrated farming system combining urban farming and aquaculture. As a result of the activities, the Tambakrejo farmer group received facilities such as rainwater harvesting installations, vertical gardens, various vegetable seeds, and compost, along with training on strengthening farmer group institutions and technological innovation in vegetable and fish cultivation through aquaponics.

This community service program at RPTRA Rasamala, South Jakarta, aimed to improve planting literacy and food production efficiency using mini-greenhouse optimization. Employing a participatory approach with Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and Just-In-Time (JIT) techniques, the program reduced seedling growth time from 14 to 10 days, increased the production cycle by 38%, and cut water and fertilizer usage by 30%. Participants also gained technical understanding of organic planting media and harvest utilization for family nutrition.

A qualitative study at State Elementary School 2 Metro Timur, Indonesia, explored the use of the surrounding environment as a Social Studies learning resource. While school gardens and community activities were found to be contextual and meaningful, obstacles included time constraints, unpredictable weather, poor student coordination, and limited facilities. The study suggests that environment-based learning has the potential to improve conceptual understanding and social skills, but faces significant limitations.

This study examined urban horticulture practices, socio-economic benefits, and constraints among 51 respondents from 5 southern states in India. Respondents spent 1-5 hours daily on urban horticulture, primarily for chemical-free food (92%) and stress relief (69%). After adopting urban farming, 67% reduced market visits to 1-2 times, and 33% to 3-5 times, with monthly savings ranging from Rs.200/- to Rs.1000/- per individual. Major challenges identified were pest infestation (35.29%), space limitations (27.45%), and knowledge gaps (23.53%).

The program demonstrated increased knowledge and skills among residents in waste management and food cultivation on limited land, supporting sustainable household economies. The integration of hydroponics and eco-enzymes proved to be an effective solution for urban food and environmental issues.

This study analyzed the determinants of productivity in Indonesia's agricultural sector. Using 2023 secondary data from 34 provinces in Indonesia and ridge regression, it found that agricultural technology adoption, plantation sector categorization, and urban farming use significantly associate with agricultural sector productivity. In labor modeling, the number of land-owning farmers and the Human Development Index showed significant associations, and cluster analysis revealed three distinct regional groups.

This study constructed a new dataset of urban productive spaces for 124 large Chinese cities to assess the potential of urban agriculture. It found that approximately 30% of urban vegetable demand could be met by utilizing spaces such as rooftops and open areas. However, urban agriculture showed little potential for greenhouse gas emission mitigation, with an average intensity (0.30 kgCO2e/kg) similar to traditional agriculture (0.31 kgCO2e/kg).

This study investigated the efforts of PKBM Satria Tama Purwokerto, an equivalency education institution established in 2006, which serves 92 students and 8 tutors. The institution provides academic programs and skills training, including fish farming and urban agriculture. Field research, using interviews, observation, and documentation with administrators, tutors, and students, showed that PKBM Satria Tama plays a significant role in expanding educational access for communities unable to attend formal education. The implemented training programs were proven to increase students' economic independence and environmental awareness.

This study addressed the challenge of continuous organic fertilizer supply for the 30-member Seruni Women's Farming Group (KWT) in Indonesia, which practices urban farming. It implemented domestic organic waste processing using BSF larvae (maggot) bioconversion technology to produce compost. The activity, conducted through lectures, discussions, and practical training, found strong local government support and high enthusiasm from KWT members and the community, successfully improving their understanding of waste processing for compost production.

This paper introduces AMICRON, a modified growth environment designed to optimize organic microgreen cultivation using mist systems and intermittent colored lighting. Experiments comparing microgreens grown inside AMICRON with those grown outside or under standard grow lights found that AMICRON's intermittent lighting resulted in faster germination and harvesting times.

A one-day urban farming training program was conducted at the Tat Twam Asi Orphanage in Indonesia to enhance children's urban cultivation skills and knowledge. The program, which included theory and practical sessions, successfully taught basic urban farming concepts and techniques. Participants demonstrated good application of learned techniques and a deep understanding of urban farming's importance for food security, as evidenced by pre- and post-test questionnaires.
