Soil Fertility Management Training for Urban Women Farmers Using PUTK and PUPO: A Participatory Rural Appraisal Approach in KWT Roay Lestari, Indonesia

This community service program in KWT Roay Lestari, Indonesia, aimed to improve soil fertility management skills among urban women farmers using simple soil and fertilizer testing tools. A Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) approach was applied, involving active farmer participation in training and field practice. Pre- and post-training questionnaires showed an increase in participants’ knowledge by over 80% and an initial-final knowledge increase of over 50%. Soil analysis revealed moderately fertile soil with slightly acidic pH, moderate phosphorus, low potassium, and low organic matter, leading to recommendations for the application of 20–25 tons/ha of manure, 20 ml/L of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria, and 3 tons/ha of lime. The program effectively enhanced farmers’ capacity to independently manage soil fertility in urban farming systems.

This study investigated the effects of food production, urbanization, livestock production, and energy use on environmental quality in Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member economies. Using the PCS-ARDL approach, it found that food production and energy consumption positively impact environmental quality, while urbanization and livestock production negatively affect it. The results suggest a need for cohesive policies to balance these factors.

This community service program empowered the Sumber Harapan Farmers Group in Padang City, Indonesia, by applying BUDIKDAMBER (Fish Cultivation in Buckets) technology. The program, which included socialization, training, and mentoring, equipped the group with skills in integrating catfish cultivation with vegetable crops. Knowledge and skills of the farmers group increased from 20% to 87.31%, demonstrating the technology's effectiveness in enhancing participation and food security.

This community service activity aimed to strengthen green economic capacity and social entrepreneurship among 42 micro-enterprise partners across four clusters (culinary, crafts/recycling, urban farming, digital creative services) in Medan City over six months. The participatory mentoring approach, including training and technical assistance, resulted in an increase in average monthly turnover for all business clusters. Partner competency scores also improved across six dimensions, with the highest increases in green economy understanding and waste management/recycling.

This study evaluated the growth of three Indonesian garlic varieties (Lumbu Sembalun, Lumbu Kuning, Lumbu Hijau) intercropped with yard-long beans as a living shade crop at Sriwijaya University's Greenhouse from July to November 2025. Lumbu Hijau and Lumbu Kuning showed superior growth characteristics, including higher germination and more vigorous early vegetative growth, compared to Lumbu Sembalun. Specifically, Lumbu Hijau exhibited significantly greater shoot length, leaf number, relative chlorophyll content, bulb diameter, and total fresh biomass four weeks after planting.

A community empowerment program in Cisalam Village, Serang Regency, Indonesia, provided knowledge and education on fish cultivation in gallons (BUDIGALON) and water spinach planting. This initiative aimed to address food shortages and promote healthy living due to the community's reliance on rain-fed rice fields. An evaluation showed that participants' knowledge and understanding of these practices increased by an average of 63%.

This qualitative study examined urban farming practices in seven major Indonesian cities, using participant observation, 52 in-depth interviews, and seven focus group discussions with urban farmers. Findings indicate that the resilience and sustainability of urban farming are shaped by collective affective infrastructures, social solidarity, and non-commodified community relations, rather than solely economic motivations or formal policies. Urban farming produces social, ecological, and symbolic value beyond market outcomes, contributing to food security, community resilience, and spatial justice.

This study in Bogor City, Indonesia, identified agricultural landscapes in six districts and around farmer groups' gardens, analyzing environmentally friendly urban agriculture practices and benefits. Data from 40 farmer groups and Sentinel-2 image analysis showed South Bogor had the largest agricultural land (10.70%) and Central Bogor the smallest (0.04%). While farmer groups adopted environmentally friendly systems, the application of technologies faced challenges related to cost and technical knowledge.

This study investigated the digitalization readiness of urban horticultural farmers in Surakarta, Indonesia, using Interpretive Structural Modeling and MICMAC analysis with data from 20 key informants. Five principal factors were identified: agricultural technology availability, digital literacy, training and capacity building, institutional support, and government involvement, with government involvement being the dominant driving force. The study proposes four strategic interventions to support digital transformation.

This qualitative literature review aimed to formulate a conceptual model for integrating urban agriculture and green economy principles in apartment housing in DKI Jakarta, Indonesia. Based on previous studies, the findings suggest that urban agriculture can be implemented through a modular vertical bioclimatic skin concept. This model has the potential to improve energy efficiency, reduce water consumption, support carbon-emission reduction, strengthen food resilience, create green economic opportunities, and enhance social cohesion.

This community service program at Kebun Saung Asri 2 in North Jakarta transformed an unproductive space into a productive green area through citizen initiative. Activities included socialization, training, technology implementation (hydroponics, drip irrigation, composters, QRIS), and mentoring. The program resulted in increased harvest productivity, diversification of processed products, strengthened community institutions, active community participation, and the creation of an educational and social green space.

This study designed two systems to support food sovereignty in Semarang, Indonesia: a sensor-based urban farming system for real-time plant condition monitoring with automatic nutrient supply and pH adjustment, and a digital local trading application for direct sales of local produce to consumers and searching for nearby urban farmers. The research was conducted through observation studies, deep interviews, and literature reviews.

Analysis of treated wastewater showed oil and grease and chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels exceeded permissible irrigation standards. Soil analysis revealed elevated phosphorus, potassium, and iron concentrations, indicating nutrient accumulation.

This study examined catalysts and constraints of urban agriculture (UA) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, collecting data from 124 urban farmers across 20 wards in 2024 using mixed methods. Catalysts were categorized as socio-economic benefits, ecosystem services, and fitness and well-being, with fitness and well-being being the most influential. Constraints included institutional barriers like lack of timely information and socio-economic challenges such as poor soil fertility.

The "Beautiful Village" program in Sidokepung Village is an environmental empowerment initiative focused on utilizing vacant land and used materials to create a beautiful and productive environment. This program involves active community participation in landscaping, using used bottles and gallon jugs as planting media, and planting ornamental and edible crops like basil, bok choy, and eggplant. Implementation results showed improved environmental aesthetics, availability of household-scale food sources, and increased community awareness of cleanliness and environmental sustainability.

This scientometric and qualitative analysis investigated how temperature was addressed in 244 urban agriculture documents from 2020-2025, with 20 articles having high thematic relevance. Research showed a strong concentration in Asia-Pacific countries and rapid expansion after 2022. Studies were classified into open (15%), building-integrated (30%), and fully controlled indoor systems (55%), with the latter focusing on high-technology. Temperature-focused studies remain limited, revealing gaps in empirical validation and multi-scale integration.

A study in RT 11, Belimbing Sub-district, BTN PKT Bontang Housing Complex, Indonesia, examined the implementation of the Neighborhood Association (RT) fund policy for community empowerment programs. Despite adequate funding, community participation in programs such as urban farming remained relatively low, typically 60–75% of the 20-person quota. While communication, resources, implementer disposition, and bureaucratic structure functioned relatively well, increasing community participation remains a challenge due to socioeconomic factors like work commitments and time constraints.

This study investigated the cooling effects of five urban green spaces in Changsha, China, using Landsat 9 remote sensing images from 2022-2024. Land surface temperatures were calculated for Yuelu Mountain, Martyrs' Park, Yuehu Park, Xiaoyuan Park, and a community garden. Large green spaces like Yuelu Mountain and Martyrs' Park showed the best cooling effects, lowering surrounding surface temperatures by up to 7.3°C compared to built-up areas. The findings indicate that more vegetation correlates with lower land surface temperatures.

This community program in Cigadung Subdistrict, Bandung City, aimed to enhance residents' capacity for organic waste management using black soldier fly (BSF) larvae within a circular economy framework. Implemented at Buruan SAE Barokah and Bumi Lestari, the program involved constructing biopond systems, integrating them with urban farming, and providing technical and entrepreneurship training. Results showed improved skills and operational capacity, with maggot production increasing from 4 kg to 8–9 kg per week, and frass used as organic fertilizer for urban farming.

This community service activity at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang aimed to strengthen environmental literacy through urban farming to support Adiwiyata school implementation. Interventions included governance strengthening, teacher training, and urban farming practices (vertical culture, simple NFT hydroponics, mini composters). Pre-post test results for 18 teachers showed environmental literacy scores increased from "Poor" (Mean=58.42±3.20) to "Good" (Mean=82.22±2.32), with 38.89% achieving "Very Good." Additionally, school PBLHS monitoring indicated that 90% of teachers integrated environmental education into the curriculum and applied it in lesson plans.

Results indicated a significant improvement in participants' understanding of cultivation techniques and their ability to apply these practices independently, contributing to increased awareness of household food security and promoting sustainable urban farming.
