Opened in July 2016 as Shanghai's first open-community urban farm. A narrow vacant lot, left unused because a major municipal tunnel runs beneath it, was transformed into a resident-participatory permaculture garden.

Baicaoyuan Community Garden

Baicaoyuan ('herbal garden') is a roughly 200 m² resident-run garden in the central square of a Yangpu neighbourhood. Supported by Clover Nature School, it is a representative resident-managed community garden.

Hongxu Habitat Garden

Completed November 2019, a ~450 m² community 'habitat garden' reclaimed from a rubble dump, with native plants, a pond and vegetable beds that provide habitat for urban wildlife while connecting residents to nature. It is the first of Shanghai's habitat-garden network (24 gardens by 2023).

Shanghai Community Garden Movement (SEEDING / Clover Nature School)

A citywide movement begun in 2014 to spread resident-participatory community gardens across Shanghai. Led by the non-profit Clover Nature School, co-founded by Tongji University's Liu Yuelai, it turns neglected spaces into citizen-built edible green areas.

Launched by the Shenzhen government in 2019, the 'We Garden' program is a government-led participatory model in which residents jointly turn idle urban land into green spaces and community gardens; several hundred had been built by the end of 2023.
