Overview
The farmers market at the heart of EAT LOCAL KOBE, the local-food platform Kobe City launched in 2015. Held in the public space of Higashi Yuenchi park south of City Hall, it began as an experiment to build a small local food cycle that brings producers and eaters closer, and has since grown into a permanent FARMSTAND shop and the wider Gastropolis Kobe vision.
Citizen participation
Residents come to the downtown park to buy seasonal produce directly from Kobe farmers, fishers and cooks and to talk with the people who grow their food. Begun as a two-day experiment in June 2015, it has become a near-weekly Saturday fixture of city life.
Operating model
The flagship of EAT LOCAL KOBE, a public-private local-food platform led by Kobe City, supported by stall fees, sales at its permanent FARMSTAND shop, and donations.
Impact
It has become a symbol of Kobe's farming and fishing promotion and local-food movement, creating a new urban routine where citizens connect directly with producers.
