Promotion of Urban Agriculture through Rooftop Farming — UN-Habitat with Lalitpur Metropolitan City (Nepal)
Lalitpur, Nepal · Operator: UN-Habitat ネパール/ラリトプル市(Lalitpur Metropolitan City)
Overview
A UN-Habitat programme run with Nepali municipalities. After implementation in Madhyapur Thimi in 2021–2022 it moved its focus to Lalitpur Metropolitan City from 2023, building demonstration farms, training trainers, drafting urban-farming guidelines and developing the "Urban Kasera" mobile app. It deliberately pairs rooftop food production with household waste management and rainwater harvesting.
Citizen participation
Training of Trainers plus technical training for urban growers, aimed at local women, youth, people with disabilities, agriculture technicians and students. The city's Women Development Division / Women Entrepreneurship Facilitation Centre and Namuna Machindra Secondary School are implementing partners, so the school doubles as a training and demonstration site.
Operating model
Funded through UN-Habitat and delivered with the city as implementing partner. Beyond training it covers drafting urban-farming guidelines, setting up demonstration farms, building the "Urban Kasera" mobile app for growing knowledge, and market linkage for organic produce — with self-employment for marginalised groups as the stated aim.
Impact
Only intended results are published — better urban food security, self-employment for marginalised groups, stronger market links for organic produce, and uptake of rainwater harvesting and waste management. No outcome figures are available: the number of participating households and any yields for this project are not stated.
Land tenure
Delivered as a UN agency project with the city, a school and a women's enterprise centre as implementing partners.
