New Taipei Citizen Farms (Shimin Nongyuan)

New Taipei, Taiwan · Operator: New Taipei City Government Agriculture Department, with local farmers' associations

Overview

New Taipei's citizen farms give urban dwellers a place to experience farming. Set up by subsidising farmers' associations in five districts-Yingge, Shulin, Xindian, Tucheng and Tamsui-they have been well received.

Citizen participation

Citizens rent plots and farm them themselves. The farms supply seeds, seedlings, materials and tools, with on-site field managers providing cultivation advice and guidance.

Operating model

The city subsidises local farmers' associations to set up five citizen farms; users rent plots and the associations run and instruct them-a public-civic partnership model.

Impact

About 405 renters farm roughly 28,000 sqm of plots, filling the farming experience and knowledge that urban residents often lack and serving as a venue for intergenerational exchange and food-and-farming education.

Land tenure

Lease

Users lease plots from the farmers' associations to cultivate.
