Overview
Two rooftop farms on the TMU (formerly Ryerson) campus that combine food production, research and community engagement through ecological rooftop farming. It began when a 2004 green roof was converted into a market garden in 2013 by a student-led initiative.
Citizen participation
Grown from a student-led initiative, students, staff and community members take part in rooftop growing, research and volunteering. Citizens engage through workshops, events and the sale and donation of harvested produce.
Operating model
A university-run rooftop farm and living lab sustained by produce sales and donations, research and educational programmes, and university support. It links ecological rooftop farming with food justice.
Impact
Harvests over 3,000 kg of ecologically grown produce a year from more than 80 crops, returned to the community through sales and donations. Its second site grows culturally significant crops and medicines for Indigenous and Black food sovereignty and includes a gathering space for up to 140 people.
Land tenure
Uses rooftops of campus buildings owned and managed by the university, operated permanently as part of university activities.
