Starting from the first garden opened in 1991 by Jean-Guy Henckel at Chalezeule near Besançon, France, the model of jardins d'insertion — organic market gardens that employ unemployed and precariously placed people — spread across the country, and the national network was formally constituted on 13 July 1999. The vegetables produced are delivered as weekly baskets to subscriber members, and the workers receive socio-professional support alongside the farming. Its distinguishing feature is that one mechanism is asked to serve both city residents' food supply and people excluded from the labour market.

A shared garden that opened on 11 March 2026 in the Croix-Daurade neighbourhood of Toulouse, on the site of a demolished building. The design deliberately keeps the existing trees and vegetation, limiting full-ground cultivation and placing planters only on the previously built-over areas. It took about half a year from the autumn 2025 consultation to the residents forming their own association.

A shared garden opened at 1 rue Sicou in the L'Ariane district of eastern Nice, inaugurated at 3pm on 8 July 2026. The 500 m² tree-planted plot had long worried residents as a site of recurrent antisocial use and sanitary problems; the city rehabilitated it into twenty growing plots for neighbourhood associations, families and schools.
