This South Korean study examines the status of farming activities carried out by farmers in urban and peri-urban regions in order to assess the prospects for urban agriculture's continuation, noting that despite its multifunctional role, urban farming faces difficulties including conflicts with urban residents and concerns over the safety of produce, irrigation water and agricultural labor amid urbanization; the paper aims to provide baseline data for discussing the future relationship between urban regions and agriculture.

Hongshan caitai (also called purple caitai), a local specialty of Wuhan, China, is regarded alongside Wuchang fish as one of the two great dishes of Chutian (2007). Following direction from the Wuhan municipal government, the Wuhan Municipal Bureau of Agriculture decided in 2005 to spend about three years organizing personnel from multiple fields to jointly develop six major vegetable varieties, including Hongshan caitai, according to industrialization requirements, with the aim of forming distinct regional industry characteristics. Based on years of production practice, the Hongshan Caitai Industrialization Technical Guidance Group compiled key cultivation techniques for growers' reference.

On December 29, 2006, the first winter strawberry festival was held in the strawberry-garden square of Hejiang town, Shuangliu county, Chengdu, Sichuan, China. At the event, a director from the China Industrial Food Association's southwest regional office awarded Shuangliu county a plaque naming it 'China's Hometown of Winter Strawberries,' and the director of the Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of Agricultural Economics awarded Hejiang town a plaque designating it a 'Modern Urban Agriculture Development Theory and Practice Base.'

The district formulated guidelines, outlining key tasks such as developing urban agriculture, boosting village economies, increasing farmers' income, accelerating infrastructure, and expanding public services to rural areas. Zhenhai District has rapidly advanced the construction of new rural communities, emphasizing integrated urban-rural planning and coordinated development, resulting in well-planned, clean, well-serviced, culturally rich, democratically managed, and comfortable rural communities.

This study investigated the construction of a socialist new countryside in Xiaohe District, Guiyang City, which has a prominent contradiction of high population and limited land (20,400 agricultural residents, 4,800 mu of cultivated land). The district government promoted urban, ecological, specialized, efficient, and leisure tourism agriculture, establishing eight agricultural tourism bases and three provincial-certified pollution-free agricultural product bases. This led to a more rational agricultural structure, diversified income channels for farmers, and improved rural infrastructure and ecological environment.

This paper reviews prior research on urban agriculture and compares Chinese and foreign urban agriculture in terms of their emergence, scope, industry structure, development direction, and functions. It concludes that the basic development models used in foreign countries are not suited to China and that China should build its own "sustainable" (continuable) development model by modernizing and adapting elements drawn from foreign sustainable agriculture practice, rather than adopting foreign models directly.

Urbanization is described here not only as a process in which population aggregates in cities, the farming economy transforms into an urban economy, and rural areas become urban areas, but also as a transition in people's behavioral and living styles. "Village-in-the-urban" is presented as a logical result of the expansion of towns and cities in China, where constant collision and conflict, along with interaction and fusion, occur between original rural culture and urban culture, and between native and foreign culture. From a sociological perspective, this paper analyzes the conflict and fusion characterizing villages-in-the-urban.

Urban agriculture (UA), a new form of agriculture that emerged in the 1950s in Europe and America, is examined here through a review of recent Chinese research on the topic. The paper defines UA as a rural-type industry located within urban areas, one that draws on garden landscapes and environmental resources and combines UA with rural industry and rural culture. Using J.H. von Thünen's agricultural location theory as its basis, it analyzes the origin of UA's location and the "UA belt" in China, and examines the production, development, and spatial layout of urban agriculture there.

A Chinese policy paper on urban agriculture development in Xinzhou District, Wuhan. Following the central government's emphasis on the "three rural issues" (agriculture, rural areas, farmers), Xinzhou pursued structural adjustment and specialty-agriculture promotion, reporting its best performance in agricultural output growth and farmer income increase in 2004 in eight years. It then sets out plans to address remaining problems—large population relative to land, low productivity, unoptimized structure, product quality-and-safety issues, and weak agricultural technology extension—through scientific planning, structural adjustment, institutional innovation, specialty agriculture, circular economy, agricultural standardization, industrialization, and rural labor transfer.

Based on survey data from randomly selected tourists visiting Yang Ling, China, collected using the contingent valuation method (CVM), this paper gathers information on willingness to pay for the visit and its influencing factors, and quantitatively analyzes the development of urban agriculture. On this basis, the leisure function of the Yang Ling Agricultural Landscape Park is valued at RMB 52.42 million. The paper also offers recommendations for future use of the CVM.

This study examined how the Kabuhayan sa Gulayan urban agriculture program in Metro Manila, Philippines -- started to improve the living conditions of the urban poor and reduce urban waste -- is implemented, focusing on the supportive roles of participants including the Department of Agriculture, the Municipal Agricultural Office, Barangays, and NGOs. It found that Barangays can support "selection of farmers" and "use of compost," attributing this to their small administrative scale, which allows them to adjust opinions with residents, and it concludes that Barangay participation in the program is important.

Urban agriculture tourism is described as a new trend combining urban agriculture and urban tourism and a focal point for research on sustainable urban development because of its social, economic and ecological functions. Urban agriculture tourism in Guangzhou is characterized by rapid growth, a high starting point, large scale and favorable returns, but also faces problems including lack of planning, similar/repetitive projects, weak cultural content, low levels of science and technology, absence of well-known brands, and disorderly development. The paper proposes developing four types of tourism — facility agriculture tourism, gardening agriculture tourism, recreational agriculture tourism and agricultural museum tourism — planned rationally across four zones (northern mountainous areas, mid-urban agricultural regions, mid-suburb gardens and southern coastal areas), and puts forward several measures.

This study surveyed 180 participants from five city farms in Taichung, Taiwan, between March and April 2004, to assess service quality, satisfaction, and intentions. While perceived service qualities were generally good, overall satisfaction was rated as "slightly satisfied," and renewal and recommendation intentions were rated as "slightly agreed," indicating significant room for improvement. Service content and management had significant effects on overall satisfaction, management on renewal, and service content on recommendation.
