Minna no Hatake no Kai (Shijima Community Farm), Kanazawa

Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan · Operator: NPO法人みんなの畑の会

Overview

An NPO started by resident volunteers in Kanazawa's Shijima district that regenerates abandoned farmland and bamboo groves, opening 'Minna no Hatake' in March 2017. It fosters cross-generational exchange, a morning market, and bamboo-resource recycling.

Citizen participation

Run by resident volunteers in the Shijima district, it regenerates abandoned farmland as a community farm. Everyone from small children to elders mingles through vegetable growing, and a weekend morning market sells harvested vegetables and handmade goods.

Operating model

The NPO borrows idle farmland and bamboo groves from owners and operates satoyama conservation, the farm, a morning market, and a base shop. It also recycles neglected bamboo into 'bamboo dome' farming structures.

Impact

Recognized by Ishikawa Prefecture as an excellent food-education organization and featured in the Regional Revitalization Grand Prize as a satoyama model that turns abandoned farmland and bamboo groves into community life.

Land tenure

Free loan

Under the motto 'land belongs to the owner, the environment to future children,' it uses abandoned farmland and bamboo groves borrowed from owners.
