This study investigated the development of urban farming as a strategy to support food security in Indonesia using descriptive and qualitative methods. While the community understands urban farming (P2L), inhibiting factors include perpetrators' lack of technical understanding, insufficient capital, and extreme weather. Local government strongly supports food security policies through urban farming.

In the Surya Timur sub-district of Kepulauan Bangka Belitung Province, an activity is implementing hydroponic-based urban farming as a green technology to become an icon for brand awareness and increased competitiveness after massive tin mining. This activity involves coordination with local leaders and hydroponic practitioners to guide sowing, planting, caring for, and harvesting hydroponic commodities.

This community service activity aimed to promote the cultivation of butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) among a group of former farmers whose rice fields were submerged and unusable due to flooding. Activities were conducted through counseling and training in plant cultivation, as well as providing ergonomic harvesting techniques and physiotherapy training to prevent musculoskeletal complaints. The goal was to develop butterfly pea as a local flagship commodity and enhance its economic value and health benefits through the concept of urban farming.

A service was implemented to provide knowledge to partners from the WES Payungi community in Indonesia about alternative strategies to strengthen family food security through microgreen cultivation. A Community Based Research approach was used, and the activity was carried out in three stages: training, cultivation preparation, and implementation of microgreen cultivation. Through this training, partners became able to practice growing microgreens for themselves and participate in introducing them to a wider community.

This study analyzed the practice of community gardens and their relevance to urban health and human well-being, using the development process of Jiuzhuang Community Garden in Taipei City as a case study. Using qualitative methods such as participatory observation, focus group discussions, and semi-structured interviews, the study demonstrated co-beneficial relationships and synergistic effects on physical and mental health. This research presents a pathway for community gardens to support place-based health concepts and respond to urban complexity.

This study examined specific structures that both afford and limit practices of environmental learning and community building in an urban community garden in South Korea. The analysis illustrated the importance of understanding the dynamic relationship between gardening practices and supporting structures. The research identified how structures can provide and also restrict learning opportunities and community building within the community garden setting.

In Polewali Mandar Regency, Indonesia, an activity was conducted to introduce the concept of urban farming through simple hydroponics to a teacher community (KGP) for utilizing limited urban open land. The activity included material provision, demonstrations, practice, and mentoring, aiming for KGP teachers to become facilitators for educators and the wider community. Evaluation results from 42 participants showed an average score of over 4 in all satisfaction indicator categories, indicating that the training provided knowledge of urban farming and hydroponic skills.

This community service activity, conducted on Jalan Slamet Riyadi in Surakarta, Indonesia, involved plant clinic consultations, demonstrations of sustainable maintenance, and seed distribution during car-free days. These activities increased urban communities' understanding and confidence in plant care, stimulated interest in gardening, and promoted greenery. The activity confirmed that direct approaches with communities, through clinics, demonstrations, and active participation, are effective in addressing urban environmental challenges and raising awareness of sustainable agriculture.

This community service activity introduced an aquaponics system through education and training, aiming to serve as a model for urban farming utilizing limited land. The system, which combines fish and vegetable cultivation, intends to provide villagers with an organic and affordable source of high-protein food.

This community service program in Triyagan Village, Mojolaban District, Sukoharjo Regency, Indonesia, aimed to develop and enhance horticulture cultivation in narrow urban spaces. Using extension, training, and economic analysis, the program found that narrow-land urban agriculture can meet household food needs and reduce food expenses, thereby improving household food security. Participants were able to practice cultivation at home.

This descriptive qualitative research examined hydroponic salad cultivation by the Bandung Gardening community in Bandung City, Indonesia. The study found that hydroponics is an efficient and effective method for producing high-quality salads in an urban environment. Hydroponic plants showed faster growth, higher yields, and better nutritional quality compared to soil-based cultivation, while also reducing water and land use.

This community service program in Indonesia aims to enhance self-potential and economy through urban agriculture programs, specifically "Budikdamber" (fish cultivation in buckets) and wick hydroponics. Budikdamber is an aquaponics technique suitable for urban areas with limited land and water, while wick hydroponics uses less water than soil cultivation. The program seeks to improve community economics by utilizing existing urban spaces such as yards, vacant lots, fences, walls, and roofs for these methods.

This study investigated the potential development of urban farming as a strategy for urban greening in Pringsewu Regency, Indonesia, by utilizing spaces in homes, idle land, and residential roads. Its objectives are to create more pleasant, healthy, and clean dense urban residential environments, apply urban farming concepts, and provide economic and environmental benefits to selected communities. Pringsewu urban area still has 1,856.36 hectares with non-urban characteristics, and urban farming is developing to anticipate decreasing urban land.

This research analyzed the influence of urban farming motives on the behavior of urban farming practitioners in using social media as a cyber extension in Makassar City, Indonesia. Questionnaires were administered to 50 respondents, and regression analysis was employed. Results indicated that urban farming motives have a significant relationship and influence on online media usage behavior for seeking urban farming information. This motive affects the choice of social media platforms and influences respondents' attitudes and knowledge after receiving information.

This study described character values integrated into urban farming activities at SDN Ngemplak Simongan 01 Semarang, Indonesia, during the 2023/2024 academic year. The research found positive attitudes towards character values such as responsibility, independence, discipline, hard work, curiosity, cooperation, and environmental care among students participating in urban farming. The findings highlight the importance of integrating character values into the school curriculum through practical learning approaches like urban farming.

This study investigated the wood types serving as substrates, ethnomycology, mineral composition, proximate, and phytochemical compounds of the wild macro fungus Schizophyllum commune Fr. in the area along the Palu-Koro fault, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, using a descriptive explanatory approach. Fungi and wood substrate samples were collected through purposive sampling in forest areas, agroforestry, and community gardens. The results identified 92 types of rotted wood, belonging to 36 families, where S. commune grew. Nutritional content was found to be good, although it varied based on the type of wood growing media.

This qualitative study explored the economic and environmental aspects of urban farming activities among 12 farmers in Kelompok Tani Taruna Tani Muara Hurip, Tasikmalaya City, Indonesia. The findings indicate that urban farming activities have not significantly contributed to the income of farmers or landowners, based on the investment ratio. However, environmentally, most farmers practice eco-friendly farming using organic fertilizers.

This service program aimed to optimize the urban farming area in Genitri Village, Pisang Candi Subdistrict, Malang City, to produce processed agricultural products with high marketability. Partners faced issues with unavailable facilities and infrastructure for urban farming. The service team implemented a program including adding plant varieties, building irrigation and sanitation channels, constructing public bathrooms, producing processed agricultural products, and marketing. Results showed that optimizing facilities and infrastructure eased cultivation for residents, leading to high-value processed products and improved local economies as MSMEs.

This study investigated the institutional aspects of subak agricultural sustainability in Denpasar City, Bali, using a literature review method. It found that institutional factors are crucial for preserving subak's viability and fostering subak farming in urban settings. Social capital was identified as the factor contributing most to the sustainability of urban farming in Denpasar City, fostering high community involvement in conjunction with Tri Hita Karana.

In Jatinegara Baru Housing, East Jakarta, Indonesia, an urban farming program was conducted from March to December 2022 for residents and santri of the Al Jabar community. The program included cultivating vegetables in narrow yards, utilizing green spaces, and training in compost and POC production. Evaluation showed that participant understanding increased from an initial 10% to 100%, the activity was rated "very beneficial," and the combined theory and practice method was considered highly suitable for participants.

A study assessing the implementation of the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP) in schools in Lila District, Bohol, Philippines, revealed that the overall program implementation was less implemented. While roles and responsibilities at the school level and the establishment and maintenance of school gardens were implemented to a moderate extent, capability building, program monitoring, sustainability mechanisms, and program evaluation were less implemented. Respondents generally perceived the program as moderately beneficial and reported that implementation-related problems were less serious.

Field findings indicated that the community is capable and competent, evidenced by their participation in yard planting and waste management to support economical and accessible plant cultivation.

A community-service report on an agricultural education programme for early-childhood pupils at an elementary school in Indonesia, delivered through a "fun learning" hydroponics approach. The activity followed observation and outreach, hydroponic cultivation practice, library revitalisation, and outcome evaluation; it reported increased children's understanding of agriculture, with potential to foster later interest in the agricultural sector, and noted that the library activities also helped increase pupils' reading interest.

This study investigated how three rates of mineral nitrogen addition combined with rainfed versus irrigated conditions affected CO2 emissions from typical crops during the wet (Kharif) and dry (Rabi) seasons on a Nitisol in Bengaluru, South India. Two two-factorial split-plot experiments were conducted under rainfed and irrigated conditions from 2017 to 2021, using maize, finger millet, and lablab, and the vegetables cabbage, eggplant, and tomato or chili. CO2 emissions were measured with a Los Gatos Research multi-gas analyzer from 7:00-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-6:00 p.m., with CH4, NH3, and N2O found negligible. Regardless of irrigation, season, crop, or nitrogen level, afternoon CO2 emission rates were 2-128% higher than morning rates. Diurnal differences ranged from 0.04-1.61 kg CO2-C/ha/h in the irrigated field and 0.20-1.78 kg CO2-C/ha/h in the rainfed field. In the rainfed field, high-nitrogen plots emitted 56.4% more CO2 than low-nitrogen plots, versus only 12.1% more in the irrigated field. A linear mixed model showed nitrogen fertilization enhanced CO2 emissions, most strongly in rainfed crops; soil moisture enhanced emissions in rainfed crops but decreased them under irrigation, while soil temperature at 5 cm depth enhanced emissions in both fields.

A 2023 study examines the process of building social capital among urban-farming-based farmer groups in RW 03, Cempaka Putih Timur Village, Central Jakarta, Indonesia, using a qualitative descriptive approach combining observation and in-depth interviews with 25 informants selected through purposive sampling. It finds that bonding social capital was expressed as relations among farmer group members centered on shared goals and emotional closeness; bridging social capital as relations between the farmer group and the RW 03 community, non-members, visiting guests, assisted groups, and consumers; and linking social capital as relations with local government, environmental and other municipal sub-departments, companies, districts, and villages. Networks arising from trust strengthen the exchange of needed resources, obligations and norms support bonding capital, and positive sanctions (rewards) support linking capital while increasing members' motivation and commitment.
