Römerstadt: the modern garden city

The Römerstadt settlement in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, was a key achievement of the "New Frankfurt" urban expansion program (1926-1932), re-housing 60,000 people in 15,000 units. It integrated technical advances like central heating and cable radio, alongside social reforms such as a model school and a landscape plan with allotment gardens and parks. This article surveys Römerstadt's design and history, presenting it as the most complete realization of the program's ideals.

A review of urban agriculture in Zambia's four largest cities revealed that despite attempts by the Kaunda government in the 1960s–1970s to create supportive policies, there is currently a near absence of institutional support, constraining farmers' activities. A survey of 400 farmers confirmed the value of urban agriculture as a survival strategy but also highlighted the lack of necessary support measures.

This study in Toruń, Poland, analyzed changes in the distribution and surface area of heaths over nearly 120 years at two former military sites, "JAR" and "Glinki." The analysis utilized historical topographic maps, aerial photos, a high-resolution Ikonos satellite image, and direct field exploration with GPS devices. It was found that the JAR site currently has 22 heather patches covering 11.7328 ha, and the Glinki district also has 22 heather patches covering 3.5701 ha, identifying them as the largest heath sites within Toruń's administrative boundaries. The analysis also outlined small fragments where heaths could be preserved after future housing estate construction at JAR and discussed future land use changes at Glinki due to a scheduled housing estate.

This study proposes a "1+4" development model, centered on modern urban agriculture as the core industry, guided by the philosophy of "surrounding the city for development and strengthening the bureau with unique features." This model aims to enhance the urban-type economy by integrating supporting industries such as real estate, industrial parks, ecological tourism, and urban services.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of the California Instructional School Garden Program (CISGP) grants by surveying 749 grantee schools. It found that the development, sustained use, or expansion of gardens was less than expected (p=.01), and fewer schools than expected reported using gardens for instruction (p<.001) or to teach academic subjects (p<.003). Less than 40% of schools reported accomplishing all their garden goals with the funds.

This project explores urban agriculture and productive landscaping in the Bronx, New York City, focusing on community gardens as an alternative to address urban problems. The study aims to describe the multiple roles of these gardens, including health-promoting, economic, environmental, and cultural benefits, and to reveal gardeners' perceptions of quality-of-life improvements. The Bronx currently hosts approximately 175 community gardens administered by Operation Green Thumb, alongside others managed by non-profits and on private property.

This study proposes management system alternatives for Gyeonggi Province's provincial parks in South Korea, including Namhansanseong, Yeoninsan, and Surisan. Namhansanseong is directly managed by Gyeonggi Province, while Yeoninsan is managed by a public foundation, experimenting with private consignment. Four alternatives are presented: establishing a new business office, unified management by the Korea National Park Service, private consignment, or consignment to local environmental groups, with a recommendation for a new business office and active consideration of private consignment, especially for urban parks. It also suggests managing certain urban park areas as "Community Gardens."

Urban gardens, by integrating nature into the city, contribute to urban metabolic efficiency and enhance biological diversity.

This study compared Ebenezer Howard's garden city ideals with contemporary urban farming movements in Sweden through a literature review and analysis of three active movements. It found that when garden city ideas were implemented in Sweden between 1905 and 1930, much of the original ideological basis for self-sufficient small towns and collectively owned land was lost. While similarities exist in ideological starting points, their approaches to change differ.

This interview was conducted for inclusion in a Master's thesis on the Eagle Heights Community Gardens.

This reflection on the urban agriculture movement notes that 19th and early 20th-century urban reforms, including urban gardens, aimed to improve living conditions in industrial cities. However, these initiatives also shifted the burden of sustenance from industrialists and fair-wage policies onto urbanizing families, particularly women. Despite this, garden spaces provided nourishment and retreats in densely populated areas.

This study segmented and examined urban farmers' behavior in South Korea using a two-step cluster analysis and multi-nominal logit model. Data from a telephone survey of 381 urban agriculture participants out of 2,000 respondents revealed four distinct clusters based on motive, place, companion, area, and hours. Significant differences were found among these groups in terms of age, city size, and housing type, suggesting urbanites select farming types based on socio-demographic profiles.

This paper discusses the need for sustainable management of urban and peri-urban agriculture in Accra, Ghana. A lack of reliable data on the extent of urban/peri-urban areas used for farming has hindered the development of sustainable policies to manage urban farming in Accra. Ground-based survey methods are problematic and prohibitively expensive, making accurate assessment of urban farming's future role difficult.

This paper constructed an evaluation index system for urban agricultural multi-functionality using factor analysis and analytic hierarchy process for 13 agriculture-related districts in Beijing. Based on GIS spatial analysis of function, Beijing was divided into three urban agricultural subareas according to production economy function, social service function, and ecological protection function. The results indicate that Beijing urban agriculture has an obvious 'core-periphery' spatial structure but with different function-orientation, locational tendency, and development patterns.

This study analyzes the sustainability of international horticulture initiatives, including those by Dutch businesses and Wageningen UR, particularly questioning their continuity if foreign support withdraws and their viability given limited foreign currency in developing countries. Using the Multi-Level Perspective framework, two cases were examined: an Integrated Pest Management project in Ethiopia's floriculture sector and the transition to large-scale urban agriculture in Detroit, USA. The report raises concerns about the long-term economic viability and self-sufficiency of these initiatives.

This paper proposes a promotion plan for urban agriculture in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, in response to increasing interest and existing initiatives in other cities like Seoul, Incheon, Gwangmyeong, and Suwon. While Seoul has an ordinance, its implementation system is underdeveloped, and Incheon's private sector-led efforts face land acquisition limits. The plan suggests establishing a public-private network centered around the Gyeonggi Agricultural Research & Extension Services' urban agriculture team, collaborating with other regional organizations to conduct research, technology development, education, and pilot projects, with specific roles and timelines for 2010.

This study examines two case studies of urban farms in the United States: the South Central Farm in Los Angeles, California, and Marra Farm in Seattle, Washington. These sites and their embedded political and social processes reveal much about current food systems and struggles for justice. The research focuses on the conscious strategies immigrant communities utilize to reinvent space in these urban sites, forming place-based resistance and project identities.

A literature review and questionnaire survey were conducted to analyze the implementation of urban agriculture utilizing idle land in cities. It was found that citizens use various types of urban agriculture for healthy hobbies and small-scale food production, and the demand for urban agriculture using idle land is increasing. Both public sectors, centered on local governments, and private sectors are implementing various urban agriculture projects, and it was concluded that the government needs to provide administrative assistance for further utilization of idle land.
