Revitalization of thematic villages through red ginger cultivation in Mulyorejo Village, Malang City

This community service program aimed to revitalize the Red Ginger Thematic Village in Mulyorejo Village, Malang City, Indonesia, through red ginger cultivation. Methods included outreach, assistance, and improving urban farming facilities. The program successfully enhanced greenhouse function, supported urban farming, and increased the number of successfully cultivated red ginger plants by the local community, contributing to economic recovery and empowerment.

This research investigated the effect of nanosilica addition on red rice growth and yield using a factorial randomized block design with two varieties (Pamera, Pamelen) and five nanosilica concentrations. Applying nanosilica colloid at 15 mL L-1 to Pamera and Pamelen varieties increased plant length and tiller number, and accelerated flowering age. However, nanosilica had no effect on harvest age and yield components.

A study conducted in Chennai, India, from April to June 2023, assessed temperature dynamics on a building's terrace by comparing a well-maintained garden area with an exposed region using temperature and humidity sensors. Findings indicated a significant reduction in internal room temperatures in areas with rooftop gardens, ranging from 4 to 11 °C, compared to rooms with fully exposed roof configurations. Simulation studies suggested that optimizing soil beds and plant density could yield an additional 3-4 °C reduction, resulting in an overall difference of up to 14-15 °C.

Pregerminative treatments of uspi (Couepia polyandra Kunth) seeds were evaluated at the nursery of the Multidisciplinary Academic Division of Los Ros to produce seedlings for school green areas. No significant difference was found among five treatments (unhydrated seeds and seeds hydrated for 24 hours with biozyme or whey), each with 50 seeds. The highest germination percentage was 63%, with seedlings reaching 7.5 cm in height, 6.2 cm in main root length, 15.94 secondary roots, and three leaves.

This paper presents a study on a low-cost system for greywater treatment for household irrigation. The system used physical filtration and UV disinfection, and three greywater samples from the kitchen, washing basins, and bathroom were investigated. High removal efficiency (>60%) was obtained for turbidity, coliform, BOD5, and COD. Greywater from washing basins showed the highest potential for reuse, as its treated quality met water reuse standards for household irrigation.

An ethnobotanical study in ProKlim RW 16 Banjarsari Village, Surakarta City, Central Java, Indonesia, identified medicinal and food plants in urban home and community gardens. The study found 56 species commonly used by residents for medicinal and food purposes, with lemongrass being the most used medicinal plant and chili the most used food plant. Likert Scale calculations indicated that 90.25% of respondents agreed self-grown food plants are fresher and healthier, and 93.39% agreed more plants reduce air pollution and lower earth temperature.

This paper defines "Vague Farms" as projects in urban vacant spaces that combine urban gardening and local food production with the preservation of informal and spontaneous characteristics of "Terrain Vague." It analyzes five case studies from different European cities to illustrate the emergence of these practices. The study provides a theoretical introduction to Terrain Vague, examines community urban garden projects through the lens of Urban Commons, and proposes a definition of Vague Farms and their characteristics.

This four-year exploratory study in a clearcut in western Sweden investigated the feasibility of cultivating crops in a nutrient-poor, shadowless environment to support biodiversity. The study found that while it was possible to grow potatoes, peas, and some summer flowers without special efforts, it was difficult to grow other vegetables and root vegetables. The project suggests that planting activities in clearcuts may impact people's sense of human-nature identity and respect for the natural environment.

In the Candi sub-district of Sidoarjo regency, Indonesia, the Muhammadiyah Student Association led a Young Farmer Movement, implementing a community service aimed at introducing and practicing hydroponic urban farming. This initiative addressed basic problems such as lack of knowledge in narrow land hydroponic cultivation, nutrient manufacturing, and product marketing, through counseling, training, practice, and provision of supporting materials. Twenty-five teenagers from the Young Farmers of Muhammadiyah under IPM Sidoarjo Candi participated, applying cultivation technology for yard utilization, AB MIX nutrient creation, and product marketing.

In Kalisegoro Gunungpati Village, Semarang City, Indonesia, mothers involved in urban farming and women farmers' groups received guidance on cultivating butterfly pea, post-harvest processing, and online marketing using the Smart Telang information system. This program transformed previously unproductive yards into well-arranged butterfly pea gardens, yielding an average of 1-2 kg of fresh flowers per member per month from October to December 2024. The harvested butterfly pea was dried and processed into "Wedang Telang" for immediate brewing and sale.

Entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) products are effective but underutilized tools for pest control in homes, gardens, and landscapes, despite being safe for children and pets. They can be used on various plants and are often cost-effective, with lower efficacy levels being acceptable in these settings. There are significant opportunities to increase EPN use in urban environments, including for previously untested pests, driven by growing urban populations and increased appreciation for home-grown produce.

A study conducted from September to November 2023 in Bengkayang Regency, Indonesia, investigated the effect of NPK fertilizer dosage (400 kg/ha, 600 kg/ha, 800 kg/ha) and fertilization time (1 week after planting, 4 weeks after planting, 1 & 4 weeks after planting) on the growth and yield of tomatoes grown in cocopeat media. The study showed that NPK fertilizer dosage and fertilization time did not have a significant effect on the growth and yield of tomatoes in cocopeat media.

A community service program (PKM) for students and teachers at SD Negeri 69 Barru in Indonesia aimed to provide knowledge and skills for cultivating plants through a simple hydroponic system utilizing plastic waste. This program served as part of urban farming and 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) concept education, creating educational facilities for students. The activity resulted in improved participant knowledge and skills in hydroponics, provided urban farming, hydroponics, and 3R learning facilities for the school, fostered 3R awareness through plastic waste utilization, and created green open spaces for student education.

This descriptive study, conducted in April 2023 with 30 pakcoy farmers in Ampenan District, Mataram City, Indonesia, analyzed the income and feasibility of pakcoy farming in urban agriculture. The average total production cost was Rp. 1,356,627, with an average total revenue of Rp. 3,110,400, resulting in an average income of Rp. 1,753,773. The average B/C Ratio of 2.29 indicates that pakcoy farming in this area is feasible.

A community service program was implemented in Pananjung Village, Pangandaran Regency, Indonesia, providing training to homemakers. The program offered instruction on organic waste management through composting and eco-enzyme production, as well as the application of urban farming in limited spaces. Participants learned techniques for processing kitchen waste into compost and eco-enzymes for natural fertilizer, and planting seeds like chili and tomato using recycled materials as planting media. This training aimed to equip participants with practical skills and increase their awareness of waste reduction and the importance of utilizing small plots for food security.

A 12-week study involving 20 middle-aged women in an urban gardening program and 20 in a control group examined the effects on physical activity and sleep quality. While the experimental group showed an increase in physical activity and improvements in stress and sleep quality scores, the study found no statistically significant difference in physical activity, stress index, or sleep quality between the experimental and control groups.

Experimental research at eight sites in Thessaloniki, Greece, evaluated the impact of aromatic and medicinal plants on the urban microclimate. Sites with these plants showed a 10-15% temperature reduction compared to non-planted areas, and potted plants on simulated balconies led to a 5-10% temperature reduction. However, areas with dense vegetation and water features exhibited increased humidity and limited air circulation, creating adverse thermal comfort conditions.

In Kontar Hamlet, Indonesia, a community service team provided counseling and training on processing banana tuber waste into liquid organic fertilizer. This addressed the issue of abundant unused banana stems. As a result, organic fertilizer was produced, approximately 90% of the community understood the concept of liquid organic fertilizer during counseling, and about 80% knew the production process after training.

Distilled hydrosol water from betel leaves, kecombrang, and jasmine flowers was used for eye drops, while betel leaves, kecombrang, ylang-ylang, and bidara leaves were combined for face mist.
