Urban farming and livelihood resilience in coastal cities: An economic and environmental accounting perspective from Kendari

This study evaluated the dual role of urban farming in Kendari, a coastal city in Eastern Indonesia, from an economic and environmental accounting perspective. Data analysis revealed that the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sector, which includes urban farming, contributes 10.66% to Kendari's Gross Domestic Regional Product, though urban farming's specific value is unrecorded. Kendari's per capita energy consumption (1,121 kWh/person) and annual CO2 emissions (316,560 tons) exceeded Asian Green City Index benchmarks, while air quality remained acceptable.

This Community Service project aimed to enhance entrepreneurial skills among students at SMAN 1 Payaraman, Indonesia, addressing the underutilization of the school garden and limited knowledge in product processing and marketing. The program, implemented through five stages including training and equipment provision, significantly improved students' practical skills and achieved high participant satisfaction. It also resulted in the successful acquisition of Intellectual Property Rights for developed products, transforming the school community's ability to produce high-economic-value goods.

In Moju, Brazil, a study conducted from August to November 2024 investigated the importance of urban productive backyards by collecting qualitative and quantitative data from a representative group of residents practicing them. Questionnaires gathered information on food production, consumption frequency, food expenses, sustainable practices, and knowledge of food security. The findings indicate that urban productive backyards in Moju can significantly contribute to improving local food security by providing direct access to fresh, healthy, and low-cost food.

In Seoul, South Korea, a study investigated the patterns and cultural-spatial meanings of garden cultivation in ground-floor private gardens of the Olympic Athletes’ Village Apartment. Using on-site observation, exploratory factor analysis, and K-means cluster analysis, the research found that garden cultivation was influenced by five factors: ‘Participatory’, ‘Practicality’, ‘Shielding’, ‘Naturalness’, and ‘Maintenance’. These factors led to four distinct garden typologies: ‘Screened Neglected Garden’, ‘Environmentally Responsive Garden’, ‘Experiential Leisure Garden’, and ‘Practical Productive Garden’, demonstrating that private garden cultivation in apartment living reestablishes a personal domain and expresses individuality.

This study investigated urban green space (UGS) changes in Jinan, China, over two decades, focusing on urban functional units (UFUs) using remote sensing technology. Findings revealed UGS expansion driven by parks and leisure areas, with economic factors like housing prices increasingly influencing UGS distribution in affluent UFUs. Challenges remain in balancing green space with urban expansion, particularly in commercial and residential UFUs.

A study with 60 participants examined emotional and visual responses to urban green spaces (UGSs) in immersive virtual environments using multimodal sensing. Participants experienced 360° simulations of urban parks, community gardens, and ecological wetlands, with data collected via electrodermal activity, pulse rate, eye-tracking, and self-reported emotions. Results indicated that landscape elements significantly influenced both visual behavior and emotional responses, with herb plants enhancing attention and positive emotions, flowering trees eliciting arousal while promoting relaxation, and artificial objects yielding limited emotional benefits.

A community service program was implemented to strengthen the organizational capacity of the Women Farmers Group (KWT) Puspitasari in Sampangan, Semarang, Indonesia. The program provided training and mentoring based on the POAC management cycle (planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling), combined with guidance on basic digital archiving using tools like Google Drive and spreadsheets. Evaluating 23 participants with a pretest–posttest design, the program showed a significant improvement in mean scores from 64.35 to 83.04, indicating enhanced participant knowledge and readiness in organizational planning, role distribution, meeting documentation, and evidence-based evaluation.

This essay aimed to analyze the contributions of systems thinking to the understanding and management of urban agriculture. Three analytical domains—physical, biophysical, and human-biophysical—were examined, and teleomatic, teleonomic, and teleological processes were discussed as explanatory frameworks for the internal dynamics of urban gardens. The essay concludes that a holistic systems perspective enables a deeper understanding of the structure, emergent properties, and functional dynamics of urban agriculture.

The "Sidney Bueno School Garden Project," carried out at Municipal School São Paulo in Rio de Janeiro between 2022 and 2023, aimed to create a garden based on agroecology and permaculture principles. Integrating school geography concepts and curriculum content related to environment and sustainability, the project sought to develop an understanding of interactions between space, society, and nature. During an eviction attempt at the Pullens Estate, squatters rained down rotten apples, vegetable peelings, and manure from a local city farm on police and bailiffs. To delay the eviction, stairwells and many flat doors were blocked with boards, steel, barbed wire, or concrete blocks, and door numbers were painted over. By noon, only sixteen of the thirty planned squat evictions had been completed.

A community service activity was conducted for members of UP2K TP PKK in Maltiharjo Village, Semarang, to introduce and implement urban farming concepts. The activity included technical training in vertical vegetable cultivation and regular mentoring, showing an increase in participants' knowledge and skills. Harvested produce was used for family consumption, as healthy menu additions, and as an income source through sales, demonstrating urban farming's potential to support food security and create productive green environments.

The cooling potential of allotments across European Functional Urban Areas (FUAs) was assessed. Allotments provide cooling services to 4.1 million people within FUAs, including 1.7 million in Germany. Each square kilometer of allotments cools an average of 8,221 people, with the cooled area being, on average, 2.8 times larger than the allotment size. Urban agriculture was 23% more efficient than peri-urban agriculture, but only 5% of allotments cooled areas with the highest heat risk.

This program aimed to increase food self-sufficiency and shape student character through practical learning and Islamic ecotheological values. The school was able to meet up to 20% of its internal food needs, and the activity fostered ecological awareness, discipline, and responsibility among students.

This study, conducted in Sampangan Village, Semarang City, Indonesia, aimed to enhance administrative literacy and bookkeeping management in urban farming activities. A participatory training method was applied, and pre- and post-training questionnaire data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests. The findings showed a significant improvement in participants' administrative and bookkeeping competencies, with average scores increasing from 65.15% before training to 82.70% after training.

This article analyzed the implementation of the Gera Juncal community garden in São Mateus, São Paulo, between October 2021 and September 2022, using participatory action research and a case study approach. The findings indicated the adequacy of "School" Time and Community Time relationships, learning agroecology and solidarity economy principles, and the effectiveness of these practices in food production. It also showed changes in individual and group conduct, trainer training, and fostered public policy development for food sovereignty.
