Sustainable vegetable garden in the school environment: A STS approach in elementary school

This qualitative research investigated the pedagogical potential of an educational product for constructing a sustainable vegetable garden with 5th-year elementary school students. Structured with a Science, Technology, and Society (STS) approach, the product aimed to develop students' understanding of science, technology, and their societal and environmental implications. Data from a field diary revealed that school garden activities, supported by an STS approach, foster students' critical thinking about food and healthy processes related to human health.

This urban farming initiative in RW 03, Cihaurgeulis Village, Bandung, Indonesia, aimed to provide understanding, enhance knowledge, and facilitate residents in implementing urban farming concepts. The program involved planting chili and red onion seedlings in limited spaces to address food insecurity in Bandung by enabling families to grow their own food. The method used was descriptive qualitative, comprising socialization and practical training on urban farming techniques and benefits.

This study evaluated São Paulo's current food supply system and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on commercial property vacancies due to remote work. It presented national and international urban agriculture examples through bibliographic surveys. These examples can guide strategies for São Paulo to enhance food security and urban resilience, ensuring long-term supply during systemic stresses, natural disasters, and pandemics.

This study examined the policy dynamics of irrigated urban agriculture in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, using stakeholder interviews and a literature review. It found that while irrigated urban agriculture is positively received for its productivity, it faces challenges from discourses prioritizing health and modernity. Authorities pursue modern farming models, but most urban farmers operate with informal and insecure access to land and water, highlighting a tension between planning ideals and urban reality.

An experiment investigated the combined impacts of composted poultry manure (CPM) and inorganic fertilizers on tomato growth and yield under rooftop growing conditions. The experiment used a completely randomized design with eight treatments and three replications. NPK fertilizers alone and CPM combined with NPK fertilizers greatly improved tomato plant growth and fruit yield, with maximum yields (68 t ha-1) and economic benefits achieved with 4 t ha-1 CPM and 100% recommended doses of NPK fertilizers.

A study in Florianópolis, Brazil, surveyed 206 individuals (102 urban agriculture practitioners, 104 non-practitioners) to analyze the influence of urban agriculture on household organic waste management behaviors. The findings indicate that urban agriculture practitioners are more likely to separate and self-treat organic waste and use compost for gardening, regardless of housing conditions. Housing conditions, however, influenced the use of public facilities for organic waste management.

In Kelurahan Gading, Surabaya, Indonesia, an integrated smart urban farming application was proposed to address limited urban land and suboptimal greenhouse management. This solution involves developing freshwater fish farming, specifically catfish, combined with vegetable cultivation like water spinach and pakcoy, to provide additional economic opportunities and meet community nutritional needs.

A qualitative study in Palembang City, Bandung City, and Denpasar City, Indonesia, explored the interconnection of urban farming and urbanization in realizing sustainable urban development. The research collected data through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation from 30 urban farming actors, 10 from each city, selected via purposive sampling. Analysis revealed a positive interrelation between urban farming and urbanization across nine dimensions: economy, social, environment, health, culture, food, education, tourism, and technology, indicating that urban farming's positive impacts can minimize urbanization's negative impacts.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of Malaysia's Urban Agriculture Program, implemented by the Department of Agriculture since 2010. Primary data from 230 participants were analyzed using PLS-SEM, revealing a positive association between all CIPP factors (Context, Input, Process, Product) and program effectiveness.

A systematic review and bibliometric analysis examined the implications of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices and climate adaptation strategies for food and income security in urban Sub-Saharan Africa. The review found that CSA practices boost urban food production and income, but also recognized critical challenges and trade-offs requiring urban agriculture transformation.

A community service program in Kebonbatur Village, Indonesia, introduced the BUDIKDAMBER system (fish and vegetable cultivation in buckets) to residents of RT 01 RW III to optimize limited yard space for food security. The program provided training and intensive mentoring on urban farming techniques. This initiative successfully raised residents' awareness and skills in utilizing limited space for self-reliant food security, leading to active participation, satisfaction with harvest results, and new economic opportunities.

A community service program in Murukan Village, Indonesia, focused on optimizing dairy farm waste utilization to improve agricultural land quality in an urban farming context. A qualitative study in the Banjar Wijaya residential area, Cluster Italy, Tangerang City, Indonesia, analyzed mutual cooperation in environmental management through literature reviews and in-depth interviews with the RW chairman, residents, and tourists. The research found that residents, initially passive, became active in environmental management, including urban farming and developing Lake Kalpataru tourism, due to the RW chairman's example and heightened awareness of environmental conditions.

A training session on making polybag planting media was held on June 3, 2023, in Sanggrahan, Central Java, for women from PKK RT 05 RW 18. The activity aimed to teach urban agriculture using polybags to address limited land, enabling residents to grow vegetables and reduce household expenses. Participants learned to create planting media from humus soil, compost, and husk charcoal (1:1:1 ratio) for optimal plant growth.

This study designed a UI/UX website prototype for the Rooftop Farming Center (RFC) at Telkom University Surabaya, Indonesia, using the Lean UX method. The RFC, which utilizes smart urban farming with IoT, faced challenges in stock information, sales reach, and research data due to conventional sales methods. The designed prototype was evaluated using thinking aloud and the System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire, achieving scores of 81.4 for the customer interface and 85 for the admin interface. Black box testing confirmed that all system features functioned well.

This article explored reflections on and ways of appropriation of a critical intercultural process approaching the practices and knowledge of Afro-Colombian peoples through the virtual, narrative, and physical resignification of "zoteas" (ancestral community gardens) by Afro-Pacific populations at schools in Bogotá, Colombia. An emerging process was identified through ethnographic recording in an intensive diary and student audiovisual content production, where the articulation of ancestral practices with experimental artistic disciplines like performance shed light on other ancestral knowledge. This intervention connected the process with contemporary expressions of the Afro worldview and allowed for questioning and gradually transforming the organization of time, space, and roles in knowledge construction at school.

This quasi-experimental study investigated the effects of green gardens on the mental well-being of elderly individuals in eldercare facilities in Kermanshah city, western Iran. Eighty participants were purposively sampled and divided into an experimental group (n=40) and a control group (n=40). Using pre-test/post-test measures with the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory, the experimental group showed statistically significant reductions in cognitive (p < .01), arousal (p < .01), and somatic (p < .01) anxiety after green garden initiatives, while the control group showed no significant changes.

It found that horticultural therapy incorporating urban farming elements was linked to multiple therapeutic interactions, with nature-based elements serving as a potential source of significant positive outcomes. The review emphasizes the value of connecting horticultural therapy with urban farming and proposes a conceptual framework illustrating their constructive interaction for improving mental and physical health.

This study, conducted with fifth-grade students at an Elementary School in Santa Maria, Brazil, aimed to present the contributions of a school vegetable garden to interdisciplinary teaching. The garden, planned and built collaboratively by teachers and students, served as a practical environment, allowing students to connect theory and practice and approach concepts in an interdisciplinary manner across various subjects.

This study examined how family farming fosters climate-resilient food systems through a systematic literature review of 37 documents over 22 years. It concluded that family farming facilitates easy access to food and nutrition by utilizing family-sourced land, labor, and capital, and by securing access to technology and markets. Farming families employ diverse strategies, such as crop diversification, adjusting planting times, and cultivating high-value crops and fish, to strengthen their food systems.

This qualitative study described a family's experience with urban agriculture and solid waste management in Emiliano Zapata, Veracruz, Mexico, through an open interview with a four-member family. The experience, spanning from 2001, included solid waste separation, composting, vermicomposting, rainwater harvesting (24 m3/year), and cultivating over 40 species of medicinal plants. The study found that urban gardens offer multidimensional benefits, including biodiversity protection, biocultural memory preservation, and spaces for learning and social participation.

This study investigated the effect of five nitrogen levels (80-160 ppm) and two pot volumes (6 L, 8 L) on lettuce (cv. Robinson F1 hybrid) in Giza, Egypt, during autumn 2022 and 2023. Increasing substrate volume from 6 L to 8 L and nitrogen concentration from 80 ppm to 140 ppm increased vegetative growth and yield. The 8 L volume and 140 ppm nitrogen concentration yielded the highest results for vegetative growth, yield, and nutrient content. However, 6 L pot volume with 80 ppm nitrogen achieved the highest net profit despite lower fresh weight, by providing the lowest nitrogen use efficiency and natural resource consumption.

This project aims to develop a conceptual plan for adapting the existing flat roofs of three towers (S-1, S-2, S-3) built in the 1980s in the Municipality of Kakanj, Bosnia and Herzegovina, into green roofs. This plan seeks to strengthen and expand urban agriculture, bringing ecological, social, and economic benefits, and promoting a healthier lifestyle through daily contact with greenery.

This scoping review examined the environmental and health impacts of locally distributed specialty crops in the Midwestern United States, analyzing 9 grey and 19 peer-reviewed sources. While specialty crops positively impacted nutritional intake for diverse populations, the effectiveness of production practices on soil and plant quality and greenhouse gas emissions was mixed. The review concluded that more rigorous study designs with long-term follow-up are needed.
