Between Australia and Cuba: The Introduction of Permaculture to Address Sugar Addiction in the Economy and Strengthen Food Security

Cuban historiography is typically divided into pre-1959 and post-1959 periods, but land-use practices show continuity across both. Two hundred years of export-oriented sugar planting left Cuba dependent on food imports, first from the United States and later the Soviet Union. After 1991, Cuba had to find ways to feed itself on land depleted by two centuries of monoculture. The introduction of permaculture — first developed in Australia and suited to urban agriculture — helped Cubans address some of these food supply problems, making Cuba a world leader in permaculture practice.

This two-factor (variety × growing-medium composition) completely randomized experiment, conducted in the Agronomy Laboratory Greenhouse at the University of Bengkulu, Indonesia, tested how cocopeat-to-rice-husk-biochar ratios affect nitrogen uptake, growth, yield, and flavonoid content of mint (Mentha spp.) grown in a drip-irrigated substrate hydroponic system. Three varieties (Spearmint, Chocolate Mint, Apple Mint) were tested against four medium compositions (80% cocopeat + 20% biochar through 20% cocopeat + 80% biochar), analyzed by ANOVA (5% significance) and LSD test. Variety and medium composition interacted significantly on growth parameters: Apple Mint showed the greatest stem diameter at 60% cocopeat + 40% biochar, the highest dry weight and nitrogen uptake at 20% cocopeat + 80% biochar, and the highest flavonoid content at 40% cocopeat + 60% biochar, while Chocolate Mint produced the highest fresh and dry root weights at 80% cocopeat + 20% biochar, showing that response to substrate composition depends on variety.

This study evaluated the effects of bamboo biochar application and varying concentrations of bamboo vinegar on the growth, sensory quality, and iron (Fe) content of red spinach (Amaranthus tricolor L.) microgreens. Using cocopeat as the growing medium, a 2×6 factorial completely randomized experiment combined biochar presence/absence with bamboo vinegar concentrations of 0, 50, 100, 200, 400, and 800 ppm. No significant interaction between biochar and bamboo vinegar was detected. Biochar application significantly improved overall growth and sensory attributes compared with no biochar. Bamboo vinegar significantly affected plant height and fresh biomass, with the highest responses at 200-800 ppm for height and 800 ppm for fresh weight. Iron content ranged from 202.09 to 481.66 ppm on a fresh-weight basis, and the study notes this water-content-dependent measure limits direct comparison with studies reporting dry-weight values.

As urban flooding, heat islands and water scarcity become more frequent in socioeconomically vulnerable peripheral areas, this qualitative case study analyzed how an agroecological community garden contributes to urban environmental resilience and efficient use of natural resources. Focusing on the Horta Comunitária Urbana Agroecológica Renova Vidas garden in Brazil, the study combined document analysis, non-participant observation and interviews, analyzed through content analysis. The garden was found to promote recovery of degraded land, conservation of natural resources and efficient water use, illustrating how local practices can contribute to urban resilience.

Using descriptive qualitative methods combining literature review, observation, and interviews with urban farmers, mainly in Medan, Indonesia, and other major cities, this study analyzed urban farming business opportunities built on organic waste management as a form of green entrepreneurship. Converting organic waste into compost was found to reduce production costs, increase soil fertility, and support a circular economy, making urban farming a potentially profitable and environmentally friendly business opportunity. Young people play a strategic role in this development through innovation, digital technology use, and strengthening community networks, but limited knowledge, capital, and policy support remain ongoing challenges.

An experimental study at the Seed Technology Laboratory of Universitas Sriwijaya, Indonesia, conducted in September 2025, tested simple seed priming treatments on four commercially marketed leafy vegetable seed types used in urban farming — butterhead lettuce, red romaine lettuce, green lettuce, and napa cabbage — using a factorial completely randomized design. Seeds received one of four treatments (untreated control, 60°C warm water for 15 minutes, 60% shallot extract for 30 minutes, or 70% coconut water for 30 minutes), and germination was recorded every 6 hours over 48 hours. Warm water priming reduced the time to 50% germination (T50) from 36.69 hours in the control to 18.48 hours, and shallot extract reduced it to 19.38 hours, indicating faster germination; the authors note this still requires validation under nursery or field conditions.

Restoration of urban agriculture soil by autochthonous fungal biodiversity

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) persist in soil and resist common recovery strategies, which matters for urban agriculture because such sites are highly exposed to varied pollution sources — and because that exposure shapes how urban growing is perceived. This study examined the fungi already present in polluted soil intended for urban agriculture, aiming to build an active microbial consortium able to transform the pollutants and lower site toxicity. The mycobiota was dominated by Ascomycota; among 28 isolated taxa across 16 genera, Aspergillus, Scedosporium, Trichoderma and Fusarium were the most abundant. Isolates differed markedly, between and within species, in their ability to grow in the presence of low- and high-molecular-weight PAHs, and some produced biosurfactants. Combining this with the ability to grow on carriers, six fungi were selected for in situ soil remediation, and biostimulation was compared with bioaugmentation using strains in co-culture. The best results came from a consortium that also showed high tolerance to high-molecular-weight PAHs. Chronic ecotoxicity testing showed no effect on Eisenia fetida except under biostimulation, which produced a 44 per cent decrease in toxicity. A mix of millet and canary seeds worked as an efficient fungal carrier.

Total annual generation was 14.634 million tonnes (up 2.6% year on year), with an overall recycling implementation rate of 91% (98% for manufacturing, 63% wholesale, 65% retail, 35% food service). By end use, 76% of recycled material became animal feed and 14% became fertilizer.

Japan's Ministry of the Environment survey results, published March 27, 2026, on FY2024 nationwide municipal solid waste generation and disposal. Total waste generation was 38.11 million tonnes (down 2.2% year on year), the recycling rate was 19.3%, and final disposal volume was 3.06 million tonnes. The number of incineration facilities fell to 991, while those with power generation equipment rose to 415, generating 10,448 GWh in total.
